Chapter 29
(Jay's POV)
I woke up at once. My heart pounding against my chest. What was that? I haven't dreamt about her in months. That couldn't be true. Yes, it was her and Percy who found me and welcomed me but the part about her in battle isn't true. It couldn't be. Why did it feel so real?
As much as I wanted her to be alive, if that was the way she was alive, then maybe I don't want her like that. Not when she's suffering. I want her to be here. In camp with me, staring out at the lake. Or teaching me how to smile. Her smile radiating her energy even when she fell asleep watching the stars like we did.
I could sense it. She felt real. Maybe it's just the gods or whoever it is playing a really messed up mind game with me. If that was the case, then I didn't want to be a part of it.
I stayed up until morning, afraid to close my eyes, in fear of what I would see next. I returned to my cabin and packed my bag and refreshed myself and headed to Chiron's office. I sat down in front of him.
"Chiron. I wanted to leave for a couple weeks. To see my dad. I've heard that he's gotten worse, so I thought that I would visit him." I said, hating that I'm lying to him but how else would I get to leave.
"That's fine. Give him my regards. I'll give you two weeks," he agreed, but he looked as if he knew I was lying. "And remember Jay, all that you see is not real. And all that is real, you cannot see."
"Thank you sir. " I said and walked out of his office and through the protected borders of camp. His words kept playing through my head. What did he mean?I walked out until I reached the main road and took a cab into the city. I had no idea where I was going, but Priya grew up in Brooklyn so maybe I should start there. Try to find answers about her death and what actually happened in Tartarus.
I didn't want to go through the worries of booking a hotel and such so I just walked around the city, looking at the buildings and making myself familiar with the area.
I went into a cafe and sat by the booth watching the news. Keeping up with the news would have been easier but of course, being demigods, we can't have those.Out of the corner of my eyes, I noticed two girls staring at me and laughing, avoiding my eyes every time I glanced at them. They were clearly attracted to me and I could sense it. However, I couldn't do that anymore. Not now. I got up ten minutes later, after the news had finished and left. I walked around and searched for nearby pools, rivers etc. I had no idea where to look for her. I would visit her mum but I know that Priya would not return there. We only ever visited there once; Priya and I; when her mum was attacked by a creature looking for Priya, and we found out one week later.
I kept walking, somehow it felt like I was going around in circles until I realised that I was being followed. I kept walking, taking left turns at each corner, which eventually lead me right back to my current spot and obviously, so did the man. I turned around and glimpsed out of the corner of my eye. He wore a hat covering his eyes and a jacket covering his body. That wasn't weird as It was the end of November and place was a bit chilly. It was the power emanating from his body, and the way he walked to me. I wanted to confront him, but I couldn't put all the lives of these mortals in danger.
I walked to the nearest parking lot, in hopes that if I needed to defend myself, I would not harm people that were nearby. I placed my hand on my sword, clenching my knuckles to get a better grip. I heard shuffling of the man's feet as he tried to catch up with me. I decided that it was now or never to act. I pulled out my sword and turned around, placing it at the tip of his neck.
The man seemed unphased by this and kept his head down."Who are you and why are you following me?" I asked sternly, while maintaining the position of my sword.
"You're searching for Priya. So am I."
"How do you know her? Where is she? I swear to gods if you hurt her-"
"I would never hurt her. I'm hoping that you will find her and return her to me."
"Who are you and what do you want with her?" I yelled, even angrier. The man raised his head a little so that we made eye contact. Immediately, I recognized those eyes before the man could even introduce himself. The same shade of green that both Percy and Priya have, but somehow it held more power. I knelt to the floor dropping my sword next to me.
"Poseidon." I said Bowing, only now admitting that I depended on his usual Bermuda shorts and floral shirts to recognize him. Instead he wore black combat boots and jean, with a white shirt and black jacket, but it was folded up to his elbows.
"Stand up, son of Aphrodite," He replied calmly, his eyes radiating kindness but his voice was strong and deep.
" I'm sorry. I didn't know that it was you."
" Yet you still protected my daughter. You've passed the test. I'm searching for her."
" But she's not alive anymore. You understood what I said when I nodded at you in Olympus."
He shook his head and then spoke .
"She's Alive. I would've felt it if she was no longer with us, but I saw her and healed her. I helped her to escape, but she's not safe on her own and you know that. You need to find her."
