I open my door quietly and crawl at the banister in front of my room. I hold the balusters of the handrail, peeping through it and spying on my dad and grandfather's talk at the hall. I eavesdrop on them. Dad sits on the couch and Grandpa sits in the wing chair, which is next to the couch and talking to him. I see a lady, looking like well-educated and attractive, stand next to grandfather, along with a little girl. I don't know exactly how old is she? But looking at the girl is enough to guess she is younger than me.

"Listen to me. Marry Angela and give her life", grandfather has pleased my dad.

"No father, I can't. It's impossible".

It clears my doubt. Bringing a new mother to me is not actually my dad's notion. My grandpa has advised him for the sake of me. Anyhow, after my response, he refuses to marry her.

"I understood your intension. I did the same thing when your mother died. Didn't she look after your elder sister Karen, you, and your little sister Maria equally?"

"Did you forget father? She left you two years ago with Maria", suddenly stands up and turns back to grandpa.

Dad's serious argument lead my grandpa to worry and feel hurt. Looking that dad kneels down in front of grandpa and holds his hands, I feel tenderness.

"I am so sorry father. I didn't mean to hurt. I'm really sorry, please forgive me."Grandpa strokes dad's hands. "I'm not telling that my stepmother didn't look after us well. What I'm trying to say is I can't go against my son. And I also can't", he takes a breath, "I can't replace anyone in the place of Amanda, in my life." His calmness revealing his helplessness in front of his father.

"Are you saying that I want to do against you both? She came to me for salvation. You know her father and I, are very close friends. She's innocent, well- educated, well-mannered,....."

"I know, father. But still, no. Don't misconstrue my words. I'm not telling neither she can't be a good mother to my son nor unqualified to be my wife".

"How can you break her into pieces?" Grandpa asks.

"I can't break my son into pieces, father." Dad raises up and again turns back.

Grandpa got up from the wing chair and tells, "I'm just suggesting you for the sake of our Nicky. He needs a person to take care of at this age, anyway. He's just eight years old, you know that."

My grandpa loves my dad, so he is suggesting to remarry. And my dad loves me too, so he strictly rejecting to marry her. Grandpa has left the place with anger. I see Ms. Angela's face while looking back at my dad. Her light-colored face has been telling something had happened wrong with her.

"Don't worry, Nick. I will be by your side. I'll take care of you." He holds me tight. "Dad is promising you, I won't do anything against your will, especially, remarry to bring another mom. I swear". He frees his hug and keeps his hand on his throat.

I can't believe if anyone tells me that they will be by my side. Cause, I'm exhausted up with those words. First, my mom said the same thing and left me, then Max and now my father is telling the same thing. I have been started literally hating those words, 'I WILL BE YOUR SIDE.'

I don't know, the exact reason for the fragile bond with my dad from the early days to now. But, after hearing my dad's words, which I don't like to hear from anyone, I have started suspecting him, whether, he also leaves me? or clings at his promise? Increased my interest day by day.

After that, days, months, years passed. On one dark rainy night, I'm crying at my mom's grave. Holding my pendant and sobbing, screaming.

I keep on asking my mom, "Come back to me, mom

I keep on asking my mom, "Come back to me, mom.  I'm missing you a lot and want to see you badly. I can't live without you. Mom?" I roar loudly so that my voice has to reach heaven. Suddenly, a big flash appears in front of me. I cover my eyes with a hand. I'm unable to see, cause my eyes, become blur.
