Does anyone else experience those urges to howl or bark suddenly? My siblings call me "crazy" for doing this and my parents keep telling me i have to stop making animal noises, but I physically can't.
When I'm mad, I hiss. Sorry, mom. Can't control it. When I'm annoyed, I growl. I can't help it.
But the ones that get on my family's nerves the most are the meows. When I walk in the room, I meow. When I walk up to someone, I meow. When someone new walks into the room, I meow. I'm pretty much non-stop meowing at people. My parents keep telling me I have to stop because I'm too old to just be doing it, but it just comes out. I can sometimes feel it coming and sort of swallow the urge, but it's really hard.
And just two days ago, I was going to the Amish stores with my mom and my sister when out of nowhere, I felt like I had to bark. I only managed to not bark by scrunching up my face into a weird grimace of sorts until the urge eventually went away, but it actually kinda physically hurts to suppress or redirect all these urges.
A few weeks ago, it was really windy so I spent the evening swinging because the only thing better than swinging in swinging in the wind. It had been years since I'd had the chance to do it (because we took out our own swings, so now if I want to swing I have to go to a neighborhood park). As I was swinging, I suddenly got one of those "gotta howl now" urges, which I had to desperately suppress because I wasn't the only person there and I didn't want to appear crazy to anyone. And I again got that slight physical discomfort from suppressing it.
If anyone out there experiences this and/or can explain why it's happening, please comment. When I tried Googling it, all I got was stuff on how to keep your cat/dog from meowing/barking. As I am neither cat nor dog, these sites were not very helpful for me.
The closest thing I could come up with is that it's a tic disorder, like Tourette's, but that doesn't feel right to me seeing as I am able to suppress or redirect it at times. So, please, anyone with answers or who can assure me that I'm not alone, I would be very grateful for your comments :)
I also get these "shivers" that show up whenever I come down for dinner. I usually have a few and then they stop, but if they keep going, I have to tense my whole body up as much as humanly possible to force them to stop. Is this even related? The only reason I connected them in the first place was because the diagnosis for Tourette's includes motions similar to this. But I doubt I actually have it. I have a habit of finding parallels with just about every medical condition and disorder I read about. I suppose one day I should just end the questioning and go get evaluated for some of it, like ADHD and autism, but I also kinda feel like "Well I've managed this long, so what would knowing one way or the other actually do for me?
Okay, I'm done now. Sorry for the micro-rant at the end there :)
