Even after living through centuries, Magnus was still very dubious about his plans for the night. He had never felt this kind of a nervousness to ask something from his lovers. But of course, Alexander was not his typical lover. Normally his lovers used him to travel the world or get the most expensive jewellery. But Alexander had never asked him much more than to buy a coffee-maker. Magnus had of course bought it and it rested in the kitchen, reminding Magnus of Alec when the Shadowhunter was off killing demons and saving the world.

Alec had never been the birthday kind of person. He'd hardly given a crap about anyone's birthday so his birthday was just receiving presents from Jace, Izzy, Clary and Simon. Magnus had woken him up with a phone call at 12 in the morning to say 'Happy Birthday' and had instructed him to get to Magnus' loft by 7pm. And now Alec was bounding up the stairs to Magnus' and when he got there, he knocked and waited.

The glamorous warlock opened the door and the air was immediately knocked the air out of Alec when Magnus grabbed him by the collar and dragged him inside the loft, crashing their lips together. When Magnus had finally let go off Alec (it took some time), Alec muttered against Magnus' mouth: "Best present ever". Magnus laughed and guided him to the sofa, before sitting down and pulling Alec onto his lap.

The night was definitely not going to plan. Magnus was supposed to open the door, calmly,  give Alec a kiss, gently, and mysteriously drag Alec onto the balcony. But like it so often did around Alec, Magnus' brain stopped working and after not seeing Alec for a whole day, his emotions had got the better of him. With a mental note to slap himself later, Magnus stroked through Alec's dark hair, twirling the strands and plucking at them.

"How's the birthday boy?" Magnus murmured, trailing a finger down Alec's arm. "He's good, how's his boyfriend?" Alec whispered back. "Well..." Magnus said. Alec immediately pulled back, concern tightening his face. "Magnus, are you okay?" Magnus smiled. No one had cared about him as much his Alec does. "I'm great and I - er," Magnus stopped. For the first time in a few centuries, Magnus Bane was speechless.

Alec bit at his lower lips worriedly. Magnus was never speechless and he never not knew what to say. "Magnus," Alec said, grabbing Magnus's shoulder. Magnus looked at him with a wary smile. "Come to the balcony, Alexander," Magnus called, already walking towards the balcony. Intrigued and confused, Alec followed.

And Alec froze. Magnus had decorated the balcony so perfectly that Alec's jaw dropped. There were ribbons, red and gold, tied around the railings and there were so many candles dotted around the balcony, all of them shining gloriously and illuminating the night sky further. In the middle of the balcony was a table, with two plates of steaming food and two glasses of wine. And the brightest thing on the balcony was Magnus' smile as he beamed at Alec.

Magnus stood facing Alec, taking in his boyfriend's expression, going from confusion to awe. When Alec looked at Magnus, he looked like he had lost the ability to form words. And as if that was the case, Alec walked up to Magnus, took him by his elbows and pressed their lips together, as if making up for words of amazement that he could not form. Magnus kissed him back and when Alec pulled away, his eyes were shining like a star.

"Magnus, thank you so much!" Alec squealed. "Of course, Alexander," Magnus whispered and pushed Alec onto a chair which was facing the table that held the food. Magnus considered sitting opposite him, but he couldn't resist Alec right now. Magnus decided sit on Alec's lap. Alec grinned playfully. "How am I meant to eat, Magnus?" Magnus considered the question. And then he picked up a fork, plucked a piece of steak and held it in front of Alec's mouth. With a smile, Alec opened his mouth and Magnus fed his boyfriend with a laugh. And this is how they ate for the night, giggling and feeding each other.

After all the food had been devoured, Magnus turned to Alec with a seriousness in his eyes. "Hey, Magnus, you sure you're okay?" Alec asked again. Magnus smiled and kissed Alec sweetly and quickly. When Alec tried to deepen the kiss, Magnus moved away. Alec's eyes, that were shining with desire a moment ago, were now glazed with concern. "Did I do something wrong?" he asked, fidgeting with his worn sweater. "No Alexander, I've just got to give you your birthday present!" Magnus exclaimed and searched in his pocket for the necklace.

Alec patiently waited as Magnus rummaged inside his jeans pocket. After a minute of fumbling, Magnus pulled something out and closed Alec's eyes with his own hands. "Hold out your hand, Alexander," Magnus whispered. Alec obliged. He felt something being placed on his hands. It was a very thin material except in one place and when Alec felt around that place, he discovered something shaped like a key. Magnus uncovered Alec's eyes and Alec looked at his present.

It was a simple gold necklace and where there should've been a pendant, there was a key. Alec deeply appreciated the present, but he was puzzled about the key. Magnus, as if sensing Alec was confused, asked softly: "You stay over at mine at least 4 days a week, you make me breakfast, you sometimes check your emails here and you make the best dinners. Would you like to move in with me, Alexander?"

Magnus was more nervous for Alec's answer than he thought he would be. Alec's face displayed quite a variety of emotions before he looked at Magnus, his blue eyes dark. Magnus cocked an eyebrow. "I've made space for your clothes, bought this stand for your bow and arrows and a little shelf for your seraph blades as well," Magnus added, wanting to push Alec to say 'yes' in any way possible.

Alec was truly stunned. With a massive grin on his face, he threw his arms around Magnus and hugged him tightly, kissing his neck. "Magnus, of course I'll move in with you; thank you so much!" Magnus smiled against Alec's embrace and said: "Of course, Alexander. Welcome home."
