(Carter's POV)
"Let's go into Jessie's room," Sally suggested.

"Do you want to?" Anthony asked.

I shrugged in response and opened the door. His dark blue bed set was neatly made and some shirts fell out of his overflowing hamper. Ghost opened the closet door and pulled out a box wrapped in pink wrapping paper with a bow on top.

"My birthday!" I exclaimed. "Its in a week! I almost forgot with everything that's been happening!"

"Open it," Anthony said.

I took the box in my hands and quickly ripped off the wrapping paper. Inside was a wooden toy that was shaped similarly to a cross. At the bottom and the left and right sides were cup shapes. At the top was a small spike. Attached in between the left and right cups is a large ball attached with a string. The ball had a hole at the bottom to fit the spike. The ken (sword) was painted white and the tama (ball) was painted with black and white stripes.

"A kendama!" I cheered.

"A ken what?" Anthony asked.

"A kendama is a Japanese toy," Joey explained. "Our friend from Texas, Daiki, has one and it is the best!"

I unwound the ball from the sword to let it dangle. I flicked my wrist and caught it in the right cup. I did it again but caught it in the bottom cup. I tried to catch it in the right cup again but it missed and fell.

"I wanna try!" Sally shouted.

She tried to get it into the cup but couldn't even make it in the first one.

"You make it look so easy," she mumbled, trying again.

"If you think I'm good then you should see Daiki. He's like a ninja when--achoo!" I sneezed. "Achoo!"

"Are you sick?" Anthony asked.

"No, I'm fine," I denied.

Johnny Ghost put his hand against my forehead. "You're burning up. Probably from being out in the rain."

"Speaking of which, where were you guys? Why did you come home together at three in the morning after she went missing?" Joey questioned.

"That's a secret, and you don't want to know my secret," Ghost warned.

Their glaring was cut off by another sneeze by me.

"We should get you to bed, miss," Toast said.

"It's Carter," I corrected. "I think that's a good idea."

I started towards the door but stumbled into Joey. My body felt weak and tired and I was slightly dizzy. Joey wrapped his arm around my waist and started leading me to my room. Ghost went to help me on my other side but Joey shooed him away.

Once we got into my room Joey shut the door behind us. He set me down in bed then kneeled beside me.

"Do you want anything? Water?" He offered.

"I'm good," I said.

"Do you still want to go back to Texas?" Joey asked. "I'd be happy to take you if you'd like."

"Maybe," I said. "I'm not sure yet. I have new friends here and I still have the funerals and stuff."

"That's okay, just think about it," Joey said softly. "But you spent your whole life back in Texas. Don't you miss it a little?"

He left the room, leaving me to drift off to sleep.

"It will cost money to add him to the funeral," Mr. Abraham said.
