The Star Who Lost Its Gleam

"Maghihintay ako."

"Huh?"

"Hihintayin kita hanggang sa pwede na." 

He made a promise under a dark and vast sky full of stars.

We both smile as we stare at each other. And for the last time, we hugged as if we didn't want to let go.

A few days after I graduated. He's off from his duty and decided to pay me a visit.

"Kumusta ka na?" I asked, but he just smile.

"Birthday mo na pala sa 22. Advance happy birthday." He then replied.

A half-hearted smile form from my lips.

A moment of silence.

"Congratulations on your graduation."

"Thank you."

Silence prevailed again. I can feel the cold wind blowing.

Then out of the blue...

"IKakasal na 'ko, punta ka ha?" 

I tried to looked at him in the eyes but he averted his gaze, as if he wasn't confident enough to face me.

I instantly diverted my gaze away. I can't bear looking at him for too long since it will only make me feel worse than I already do.
I just laugh and try to hold back my emotions.

"Y-yes. Sure. I'll be there for you."

I felt like I couldn't breathe while uttering these words. A bitter smile plastered on my lips.

He then glanced at me, as if he wanted to say something, but decided not to. And then, he let out a heavy sighed.

After that, neither of us spoke again.

I looked up at the radiant sky. Thousands of stars continue to shine down on us.

Then it happens: rays of beautiful stars pass over us. This give a bright streaks of lights across the dark sky. It's a sight we'd want to see together.

And time passes by.

"You promise that you will wait for me." I tried to whisper it as he walked away from me, but only the wind and stars are able to hear it.

I stood there looking at him slowly disappearing from my sight as I continue to wish that he'll remember the promise he made and would come back at me.

But it didn't happen.

He's gone.

I guess I'm the only one who clings to it and continuously believes in your lie.

Tears started to roll down from my cheeks.

While the meteor shower gradually disappeared and ended, I stood there silently crying.

It's already dawn and as the sky gets brighter, the stars slowly lost their glimmers. 

And so do I.
