The door slammed, making me jump from the rattling of the apartment. I turned my head toward the man stomping toward me with anger on his face. He threw some papers down and tore off his blazer. After the walls had stopped shaking, a picture frame fell off the wall. I was just glad it wasn't the picture of me and Sofia. It was, however, a picture of us.
I silently watched him tear open the refrigerator door. I worried he would break it off the hinges the way he threw it open. I decided to stay out of it. I didn't want to deal with his fit tonight. I was tired from my long day at work and I was relaxing with my freshly made dinner.
He grabbed a beer, opening it with the countertop edge before slamming the fridge shut. I chewed quietly, watching him with disgust and resentment. Just a few more weeks and I'd be gone. I didn't have to worry about the damage repairs. My name was already taken off of the lease without him knowing. Sofia and my apartment were already covered. We'd be gone before he knew it.
"There's chicken parmesan. Your favorite." I slightly taunted, but hoped he wouldn't see it. I hoped he would've appreciated it as a nice gesture.
"You couldn't wait to eat it with me?" He asked, walking over to the pan.
"What happened at work?" I asked, filling my mouth with more food. He chuckled, keeping his back to me.
"My dad is a fucking idiot. His clients are useless. If he wants me to take over then he needs to trust me." He explained, taking a large sip of his beer. He had a problem.
"What does that mean?"
"It means that he's not giving me a fucking job, Everly. If he keeps this shit up, then I'll be unemployed." He yelled, making my body tense. That wasn't good. I wouldn't be able to leave if he was home all the time. Unless we could leave while he was at the bar. "You're going to need to pick up extra shifts until I can figure this out."
"I can't, Alex. I'm already working seven days a week. I can only do night shifts, I told you that--"
"I'm not asking. Do you want to stay in the apartment?" He yelled, turning to look at me with rage.
"I can't. I'm working nights and I have to leave my days open for Linda--"
"Give up on that fucking dream, Everly! You're never going to make it." He screamed. I think our neighbors were too scared to complain. They hear our fights every week.
"I'm not picking up extra shifts." I sternly told him, getting up to put the empty bowl in the sink. He snatched the bowl from my hands, slamming it against the wall. The bowl shattered and exploded the sauce all over the place. "You're cleaning that."
"Oh, am I?" He asked, grabbing my arm. I tried to pull away, tired of how he felt he could treat me. "You are my girlfriend. You do as I say. If I tell you to pick up shifts, you pick them up." He shoved me, making me run into the fridge. He walked away, taking a swig of his beer while I angrily watched him. "Clean it."
"Fuck you," I said, grabbing my keys.
I walked toward the door, hearing him walk out of the room. I slammed the door on my way, running so he couldn't catch up to me. As I rounded the corner which I don't normally take, I heard the door open. I ran, breathing out in hopes he wouldn't follow me. I made it to my car, instantly locking it. I sighed in relief, but it quickly changed to fear as he slammed his hands against my window, banging on it.
Bang.
Bang.
Bang.
"Everly." I gasped awake, shooting up in fear. My body felt like it was on fire. My heart was racing a mile a minute. "Hey, hey. It's me, baby." The calming voice pulled me to my senses. Harry's hands were gently holding me while he sat on the edge of his bed. He was looking at me with confusion but had a small smile on his face. "Are you okay?" His hand pushed my hair behind my ear.
