Chapter 20: The Truth

Dil's P.O.V:
I rode my bike home as the revelation of who my true father and my family has been told. After clues being scattered all over the place, it was too much for me to handle. I needed to take my mind off things as the load was too heavy for me to carry. It's basically the truth punching you at the face.

Preston... Preston Chappa...

The Retired and loved Councilman of Willow Creek...

My birth father... Is that old man that I met. For the 17 years... It took him that long to tell me the truth?! I arrived home and Dan and Phil were about to kiss in the living room till I slammed the door opened. They were shocked but they kept their calm.

"Dil, you're back early" Dan said.

I felt smug. Looking at my adopted parents didn't feel the same anymore. I know that the reason they adopted me is because I have a few of their qualities and genetics even if I was born by someone else but now, looking at them... They now look like strangers to me.

"Dil, are you ok?" Phil asked.

"I know who my real parents are" I said.

"What?" They asked as they bring me to the living room couch.

I was still taking it all in and Dan and Phil are trying to cheer me up. What will they think of me when I exposed the identity of my true father. That my father is a family friend, more of Dan's friend since he's the only person he can talk politics to.

"I did some research a few weeks ago and there were notes being placed around me and I just realised..." I said as I start to cry.

"What is it?" Phil asked.

"Preston... Is my father" I said.

Phil's P.O.V.
"Preston... Is my father" Dil said.

Oh no... Dil figured it out. It's too early. The plan was when he turns 18. Me, Dan and Preston talked about it last year and that the truth would be told when he grows up. But Dil's persistence has made this secret revealed too early. But we need to be there for Dil.

"He told you?" Dan asked.

"I asked, I had the evidence. The notes, the handwriting, the newspaper articles... I showed all the evidence like Dan would do in a court case and Preston had no other choice but to tell the truth" I said.

"Oh Dil" me and Dan said.

We patted our son like any parents would do. But Dil wouldn't take it. He pushed out and stood up. He then faced us in a odd matter.

"You knew... Didn't you?" Dil asked.

"What?" Dan asked.

Dil turned around and pushed down the coffee table, knocking down the porcelain pig. Dan was about to get mad but I calmed him down. Dil has that look of anger and confusion and all he wants is the truth.

"You know that Preston is my father!" Dil asked. "TELL ME THE TRUTH!!!".

"Dil... calm down!" Dan said.

"No! You guys knew... Quit avoiding the question!" Dil yelled.

"Yes" I said softly.

"Phil... what are you doing?" Dan asked with tears on his eyes.

"Telling our son the truth" I said.

I walked to Dil and placed my hand on his shoulder. I took a deep breath and told him what he needs to hear... The truth.

"When Preston came over last year, he told us. At first, we planned not to tell you but after your break up with Summer and you feeling bad, Dan and I went to Preston and asked him if he could tell you the truth. He didn't want to at first but it took some convincing and that on your 18th birthday, Preston will tell you" I said.

"And tell that to Erica when it just turns out that she's my SISTER?!" Dil said.

"Wait... Erica is your sister?" Dan said. "That we didn't know".

"But you know something relating to it don't you?!" Dil asked.

"All we know is some affair with Lilian Chappa" Dan said. "But Dil, you know we love you".

"Shut up!" Dil said.

He pushed my hand off him and moved away. He now sees us differently now. He no longer sees us as his loving parents but something else...

"I'm sorry but... I need to go!" Dil said.

Dil ran off to his bedroom then we saw him out off the house by climbing out of the window. Dil took his bike and rode off road and it was hard for us to call him back. Me and Dan rode into Dan's car and drove off to find him. I started to cry and Dan tired to cheer me up.

"We're horrible parents" I cried.

"No we're not!" Dan said. "Dil is now in his own form of Existential crisis. I can see it in his eyes".

"How would you know?!" I asked.

"Because... It happened to me... Back in 2011" Dan said.

Dan's college entrance exams... When he was studying... When he blew up and went into depression... Is that what Dil's feeling right now? I'm worried about him but I don't know how to trust us again. Will he even trust anyone for that matter since the meanest girl in the town is his sister, the retired council man is his father and we as parents just hid the truth for him...

The truth hurts... But there is no turning away...
