The sky was a bright orange. Katara was getting a little rest before battle. But I couldn't sleep.
I looked at Zuko, he looked troubled, "Hey, we can beat Azula. You don't need to worry."
"It's not her I'm worried about. I'm worried about Aang. What if he doesn't have the guts to take out my father? What if he loses?"
I moved closer to him, "He's not going to lose. I believe in him."
Zuko had a silent cuckle, "I wish I had your confidence."
I smiled sadly, "It's not really confidence, it's more like... There's no other option. I can't think of any other happy endings. And I want a happy ending."
I looked him in the eye, "I'm scared. I'm terrified Zuko. But I can't let that stop me. I can't stand the thought of things going badly today. I don't want to live a life without you."
His eyes widened, but I already made up my mind, "I love you Zuko. I'm sorry if you don't feel the same way. And I'm sorry if this makes today any harder than it'll already be. But I don't want to die without telling you."
The next moment passed by like a year. I watched as our lips met. I closed my eyes as my hands ran to his hair, running my fingers though the soft locks. I felt his hands around my neck. It was hard to say who started the kiss. Might have been me. I couldn't tell.
We broke free. I opened my eyes. His eyes were still closed. Everything was silent.
He finally opened his eyes, "I... I love you too."
I sat back. I smiled, "Let's win the day. Okay Princey?"
He laughed, I loved the sound, "Okay."
"By decree of Phoenix King Ozai, I now crown you Fire Lord..." The Fire Sage saw the three of us.
Azula looked back at him, "What are you waiting for? Do it!"
Zuko, Katara, and I landed Appa and got off.
Zuko looked at his sister, "Sorry, but you're not gonna become Fire Lord today. I am."
Azula laughed, she looked... broken, "You're hilarious."
Katara placed her hand on her hip, "And you're going down."
The fire sage went to finish the carnation, but Azula stopped him, "Wait. You want to be Fire Lord? Fine. Let's settle this. Just you and me, brother. The showdown that was always meant to be. Agni Kai!"
Zuko looked her in the eye, "You're on."
I clenched my fist.
Katara turned to him in a panic, "What are you doing? She's playing you. She knows she can't take us all, so she's trying to separate us."
"I know. But I can take her this time."
"But even you admitted to your uncle that you would need help facing Azula."
I looked at her, "There's something off about her. She's slipping."
Zuko nodded, "This way, no one else has to get hurt."
We stood in the courtyard. This reminded me of the last Agni Kai I had seen, the one with General Zhao. Each of the siblings kneeled on either end of the yard. Azula stood up, removing the bulky firelord robe.
Her movements were stiff and almost erratic, "I'm sorry it has to end this way, brother."
"No you're not."
