"She's acting weird." Rohan suddenly speaks out after a long silence. I look up from my book towards Rohan's distracted face. Acting weird? Oh, right! He must be talking about Yohanan. She has been acting quite distant lately. Not talking to everyone as much and things like that.
"Yeah, I noticed that too," I replied. "I wonder why..." I said. "She always look stressed out. Always looking like she's thinking hard about something. Just what is on her mind?" I added.
"She's always like that since we first met her. But things seem to get worse." Rohan said. "She's going through a lot of things too..." He muttered, there are hints of worries in his eyes. "Her parent's death. Inheritance issue... And..."
"And?" I asked.
Rohan did not answer me. He just sat there looking blankly at the table. His eyes unfocused, as if he is reminiscing a memory. I stared intently at him trying to figure out just what is he thinking about. Then something came to my mind. The image of Yohanan with tears on her eyes while Rohan is comforting her. 'Please don't leave me' is what I think she said. Must be about that.
Rohan's expression suddenly turns into one of frustration. "Just what is it that she can't tell us?" He hissed. This subject has been our frequent topic since we became friends with her. I sighed. It kind of hurts to know she would not open up to us even if we wanted her to do so. But that is also not a reason for us to force her to. That is why we never really got to the bottom of Yohanan's peculiar acts.
I think for a minute about all of this before my mind drifted to Maya Reid, the new student in our class. " Could it be the fact that she is uncomfortable around Maya?" I asked. I often see her just staring at Maya at times, sometimes giving her a weird look before shaking her heads. Again, she always looks as if she is thinking about something when she look at Maya. Hmm, wait... That same look..." I can't believe it! Why didn't I notice sooner?!" I said.
Rohan quickly turns to look at me. "What?" He asked.
"You remember what we talk about Mr. Berry before?"
"About him being suspicious?" He said.
"Well yes! But no. I mean, the part where Yohanan seems to be acting weird around him." I said.
"Oh, I thought this is about the part where we confirmed that he's an asshole," Rohan said while rolling his eyes. Sometimes he can act a little ...-
"You did notice that Yohanan always seems to be staring at him when he's not looking, right? With a weird look on her face. But after doing that, as if she reached into a conclusion or whatever it is, she shook her head and return to normal?" I said. Rohan thought about it for second before nodding his head in agreement." She did the same thing with Maya!" I said.Rohan narrowed his eyebrows while thinking about it. Then he nod," I think so." He said.
"Trust me, it's the same stare. The same stare she sometimes do while she is staring at us without her noticing that we actually noticed her!" I got excited as I realise I am getting closer to the 'truth'.
"Yes, I trust you on that matter. You are good at observing people." Rohan said giving me credit." But what does this 'stare' have something to do with her not opening up?" He said. "There is connection there. But I don't see any rational reason why."
"Don't you know anything that can make it seems rational?" I said. "You are Prince Rohan, after all. The Crown Prince." I muttered.
Rohan closes his eyes for a moment before sighing. "There is something." He muttered. "Don't tell anyone that I told you about this."
I smiled. "Promise!"
"If her parents actually are open about their 'job' towards Yohanan." Rohan said. " She knows something normal people don't know." He said, piecing his word carefully as to not tell me directly what it is but enough for me to figure it out.
With that new piece of information, I began thinking deeply about it. Then, it came over me, "Spying?" I whispered.
Rohan just gave me a silent nod. " The inheritance issue everyone in the castle talked about... It's about this. She's supposed to be continuing her parents 'job' if she inherited everything."
"Wait, wait. This just became more confusing!" I said. "Are you saying she is spying on everyone this whole time?" I asked.
"Yes but only for her personal benefits, I think." Rohan said. "Did you remember when she asked us about Gabriel Owens?"
I nodded. Yeah, I remember that. Instead of asking the question directly to Rohan. She asked me instead. I guess it is easier to extract information from me. But, still, nothing really confirmed that she is THAT suspicious.
"She's collecting information..." Rohan said. "Remember the excuse she gave us when I asked how she knew about Gabriel?"
I nodded again. She said something about her parents knowing the Owens.
"Her parents never associated themselves with the Owens... Publically. And everyone who knew the Owens are strictly forbidden to talk about Gabriel to protect his privacy and safety. Yohanan isn't supposed to know his existence. " He added.
"Woah, woah. Stop right there, Rohan." I said. I think our discussion about Yohanan just went into a dark path. That is not right. We are just guessing all of this. Not the time to think of her like that. "Maybe she met him. Gabe just started attending school again, right? Maybe they met." I said trying to defend Yohanan.
Rohan went silent again. Probably thinking. After a while, he just sighed. " Yeah. you're right." Even if those words came out from his mouth. I can still see his expression darkening more and more.
"What are you thinking?"
"Could this have something to do with the incident?"
My body suddenly hold my breath. "No." I said.
Rohan looked at me with a surprised look on his face. "I went too far. Sorry."
Then the room was filled with uncomfortable silence. After things calmed down a bit. I said, "Why don't we just talk to her about all of this. About what we think and what she is thinking."
"Right." Rohan nodded. "But that's an impossible thing to do."
"I have an idea."
