A week later Lucifer found himself sat in the library waiting for Adam to show up for his final lesson. He had not seen Lilith all week, but that did not stop her being on his mind constantly.
He leant back in his chair and closed his eyes. He was so tired, he could barely sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, he relived the kiss he had shared with Lilith. It had taken all of his resolve to stay away from her. All he wanted was to hold her again, kiss her once more.
His thoughts were interrupted by a polite cough coming from the doorway. He opened his eyes and saw Adam standing there.
"You're late." Lucifer's voice was practically a growl.
"I know and I am so sorry. My lesson with Gabriel lasted longer than expected."
"Well, let's get started shall we?" said Lucifer, opening the large book in front of him. He noticed Adam hesitating in the doorway. "What is it?"
"Can I ask you something?" Lucifer swallowed his anger and gave Adam a curt nod. "What am I doing wrong?" Adam took a seat opposite him, up close, Lucifer could see just how nervous he looked.
"What do you mean?" asked Lucifer, puzzled.
"Lilith...she does not seem to have any desire to be mine." Lucifer had to restrain from smiling.
"What makes you think that?"
"She has not been welcoming of me, but I thought she just needed time to get used to me. However, the last week, she has barely spoken to me. She has been withdrawn and seems to be constantly upset." Adam dropped his head and Lucifer did feel sympathy for him, if only momentarily. "I am sorry to tell you all this, but I know that she had confided in you before. I just wondered if she had mentioned me to you at all?" Lucifer's sympathy soon disappeared, he had no desire to help Adam become closer to the woman that he wanted.
"She would only speak to me of her studies, nothing more....now, shall we begin ours?" Lucifer's tone was sharp and put an end to Adam's questions.

Three exhausting hours later, Lucifer sat alone in the library once again. He could not stop thinking about what Adam had said earlier.
Suddenly his anger flared. Why could she not be his? She was not happy with Adam, but the two of them obviously had a connection. Father must be aware, perhaps this was one of his tests.
The humans were due to leave for Earth within the next few days. He must speak to the Father before it was too late. He practically flew from the library and towards the throne room.
"Father!!"He threw open the doors to find The Father sat there, but he was not alone, Michael was sat with him.
"Ah, Lucifer, I wondered when I might see you." The Father was unsurprised by this interruption
"I know you are aware of my feelings for her, Father. I know that she is meant for me and I for her. You must replace the wife of Adam." The Father's expression grew thunderous.
"How dare you command me to do such a thing! I cannot change the beginning of all humanity just because you happen to find one of them attractive!"
"It is not just that, Father, I love her!"
"Really? Just like the others that you have loved and so quickly thrown away?" Interjected Michael who gave Lucifer a withering stare.
"That was different." He ignored his brother's gaze. "she is different."
"You are my son and I will always love you, but you have always wanted what you cannot have. It is the same situation yet again. The humans will be sent down to Earth in two days and you will stay away from Lilith. She is far too important to be used as one of your desires."
"Please Father, I am begging you.....do not send her away with him." He fell at his Father's feet.
"Lilith is the mother of mankind and I will not do anything to jeopardise that. You will stay away from her and I will hear no more of this...Michael, please escort your brother out."
Michael stood and roughly grabbed Lucifer by the arm. Lucifer shrugged him off.
"You are wrong Father, I will have Lilith as mine, no matter what!"
"I have forbidden it.....now LEAVE!" Lucifer did not even flinch at The Father's outburst, instead turning on his heel and walking out. Michael turned to The Father.
"Should I go after him Father?"
"No Michael, we will leave him be. I just hope he sees sense. Otherwise-" The Father trailed off as his eyes filled with tears. He bowed his head. "Leave me now please son." Michael nodded and did as he was asked.

Lilith sat in her room, relaxing after a rather intense training session with Michael. She absent-mindedly flicked through the book she was reading, her mind, as usual, on Lucifer.
She had not trained with him all week and every time she asked the others, they feigned ignorance.
Deep down she knew that they were being kept from each other, due to what had happened between them. Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Come in!" She called. Adam opened the door and stood in the doorway.
"Good evening Lilith, how was your training?"
"Tiring but good......yours?"
"Same here, would you like to go for a walk?"
"Oh well, I was in the middle of this book-"
"Please Lilith, I need to talk to you." Lilith nodded and stood.
"Of course."
They made their way out of the palace and walked around the grounds. They had been walking in silence for a few moments before Adam spoke up.
"I know all this must be difficult for you." Lilith turned to Adam in surprise.
"What do you mean?" He stopped and grabbed her hands.
"We were made for each other and I loved you the moment I saw you, but you-" He was interrupted by Lilith's outburst:
"How could you love me Adam? We barely know each other!"
"You are mine Lilith, it is as simple as that. I know you have some misgivings about me, but I hope that in the years we are together you will grow to love me. It is our duty to begin humanity...this is greater than the both of us."
Lilith was silent. She had to agree with what Adam was saying. It was bigger than either of them or their desires. She lowered her head in defeat.
"You are right, Adam. I am sorry for how I have acted towards you." He smiled and squeezed her hands.
"There is nothing to apologise for Lilith." He took a step closer to her and ran his fingers down her cheek. "I just hope that one day you will feel for me what I feel for you."
Her eyes clouded with tears and all she could do was nod. He may not be who she wanted, but he was a good man. She had to put her desire for Lucifer aside and focus on Adam. It would be difficult, but it was the right thing.
"Shall we go have some dinner?" she asked, deciding to offer an olive branch. Adam smiled.
"That sounds like a great idea." Lilith kissed him on the cheek and they walked back to the palace, side by side.

After a rather pleasant meal and conversation, Lilith was in her room getting ready for bed. As she walked over to the bed to undress, she noticed a small folded piece of paper on her pillow. With a puzzled look on her face, she unfolded the note.
Lilith, please meet me tomorrow night in our thinking place. I have something important to tell you. L
The moment she read that note, she knew that she would go to him. She could tell herself she was only going to let him know that nothing could happen between the two of them, but really, she just wanted to see him, even if just one last time.
Lilith fell asleep with the note clutched to her chest.
