Weeks passed by in the garden and Lilith grew more and more disillusioned. She had tried to fit into the role of Adam's partner, but the more time she spent with him, the more she resented him.

He was simply lazy. He spent all of his time sleeping, exploring the gardens and playing with the animals. It was up to Lilith to provide the food and water for them. She felt less like a partner and more like a slave.

When the evening came around, in an effort to fend off any of Adam's advances, she would take a walk alone. She would be gone just long enough so that by the time she came back, Adam was fast asleep. It was no accident that her nightly walks would always take her by that apple tree. Ever since The Father's warning, she could not help but be drawn to it. A part of her hoped that she would find Lucifer there. Every time he was not and her disappointment was crushing, but she would not stop.

"Brother, I hate to see you like this. Can you not just apologise to The Father?" Uriel stood in the cell with Lucifer. He was the only one that would still visit.

"I will not apologise for following my heart. I love her Uriel." Uriel sighed.

"Just like you loved all the others.....including Michael's own wife." Lucifer flinched. It was a low blow and Uriel knew it.

"That was a mistake, but not this time. She is different from all of the others. Uriel, you must understand, I must go to her. I fear she is unhappy." He noticed the worried look flit across Uriel's face." You know something.....what is it?"

"I....I cannot say too much Lucifer, please understand....but, I know that she looks for you each night." Lucifer shot up and grabbed his brother by the shoulders.

"Then help me get out of here and go to her!" Uriel plucked Lucifer's hands from his shoulders and held them in his own.

"You know that I cannot go against The Father, even for my own brother."

"Then you are no use to me...leave!" shouted Lucifer as he ripped his hands from Uriel's grasp. Without another word, Uriel turned to leave. As he closed the door behind him, Lucifer heard his quiet voice.

"I am sorry brother."

A short time later, Lucifer heard footsteps outside of his cell again. "Uriel, I told you to le-" The face at his cell door was not Uriel's. It was Jophiel, his second in command.

"I am sorry for the delay."

"Please tell me you have good news." Jophiel smiled and lowered his voice.

"This evening, brother.....be ready." Lucifer grasped his hand through the bars.

"Thankyou."

Lilith knelt by the river, washing the fruit that she had collected that day.

"Ah, Lilith, there you are! Where have you been all day?" Swallowing her anger, she turned to Adam.

"I have been collecting food for us all day....we would not want to starve would we?"

"Of course not, plus how could we when you are so good at it?!" He gestured at her work. "Anyway, leave that....I have something to show you, come with me." Lilith sighed but stood.

"What is it?"

"It is a surprise!" He extended his hand to her, after taking a deep breath, she took it. They walked along in silence for a short while, until Lilith could hear the distant sound of falling water.

"What is that?"

"I told you....a surprise. Now close your eyes and I shall guide you."

She did as instructed and felt Adam grip her hand tighter. With her eyes closed, she could imagine it was Lucifer's grasp instead, leading her away from it all. They came to a stop but Adam did not let go of her hand. The water was now a roar in her ears. "Now, open your eyes."
