Deep breath. You can do this. I took one final, steadying inhale before knocking on the door to Draco's bedroom at Malfoy Manor. While his parents were away in Azkaban serving their sentences for their support of the Dark Lord, Draco and I had been living together at his childhood home after finishing our last year at Hogwarts together. He was working for the Ministry, having been cleared of all charges against him in the wake of the Battle of Hogwarts, and I was helping to rebuild the credibility of the Daily Prophet as a junior reporter. Our work days were long, so the evenings were really the only time we got to see each other, but lately it felt like we had been fighting more than enjoying our limited time together.

"Come in," Draco called. I creaked open the door to reveal the large room, with Draco sitting at the desk in the corner poring over some documents from work. His hair was disheveled, like he had been running his hands through it like he did when he was frustrated, and his face looked tired and grey. He looked up at me with an expression of annoyance lurking in his eyes.

"What is it Y/N, I'm quite busy at the moment," he asked curtly, almost dismissively. His attitude made my heart sink a little, knowing that the difficult conversation we were about to have would make his bad mood even worse.

"Don't talk to me like that Draco, can I not come into the room and try and go to sleep after a long day at work?" I quipped before I could stop myself. The one thing I hated more than anything was being talked down to, and that was one habit Draco had unfortunately picked up from his father. His scowl deepened.

"If you want to pick a fight with me, might I suggest you leave it until tomorrow? I don't have time for this," he growled. I rolled my eyes, anger boiling up in my stomach and spreading through my body like fire.

"I'm not 'picking a fight', Draco. I actually wanted to speak to you tonight, it's important." I crossed my arms defensively over my chest, preparing myself for the fight that I knew inevitably was going to come.

Draco sighed, rubbed his hands over the ridge of his brow, and turned to me.

"Well, spit it out then. What's on your mind tonight?"

"All we do is fight, Draco! I love you and I want to support you, but it's been really difficult not to feel that reciprocated. I know you work hard but I have a hard job too, you know! Plus, who does all the cooking, and cleans the house, and makes sure things around here run smoothly while everyone is gone? Me! All I'm asking is for you to stop taking your frustrations out on me and to put in a little more effort, because it's hard to be in a relationship that's entirely one-sided!" I blurted out all the words that had been swirling around in my brain for the last few weeks, feeling a tremendous weight lift off my shoulders when I was done. Instead of apologizing and vowing to do better, or even acknowledging that he had heard me, Draco just stared blankly at me for a few seconds then turned back to his work, without saying a word. I felt furious, ignored, upset.

"Are you serious right now, Draco Malfoy? You're just going to ignore everything I said to try and fix our relationship and just let it be broken? Is that what you're going to do? You won't even try to fix it?" I heard the accusing tone in my voice and noticed it was a lot harsher than I meant, but it was too late now. The words had left my mouth, there was no taking them back. Slowly, Draco turned back to me, and I saw the fury burning in his steely grey eyes.

"Don't you dare accuse me of not trying with this relationship, Y/N!" he shouted. "I stood by you throughout this entire fiasco for the last couple years, I chose you over my own family for Godric's sake! I've made sacrifices for you that you can't even begin to understand, and this is how you're going to thank me? By calling me lazy and telling me I don't care about you? Absolutely not."

"I appreciate your choices Draco, I really do, but the past is in the past. We've moved on from that now. What's done is done, and you have to understand that a few good deeds from the past doesn't fill your quota for the time being, a relationship is always growing and it always requires work! I don't understand why that's so hard for you when we both work just as hard as each other, but somehow I manage to put in more work than you do day in and day out! I always -"

"Shut up Y/N! Why can't you ever be sympathetic and just be kind for once? If you had picked any other day, this wouldn't even have been an issue, but you had to go and pick the time when I had the most work on my plate to go and accuse me of all this, and frankly, it's all false! You need to apologize, I won't put up with this behavior from you in my own house."

"Make me," I spat, not even realizing how childish the words sounded coming out of my mouth. Draco's eyes darkened.

"What did you just say to me?" His voice had dropped to a whisper, just a breath, and he practically jumped out of his chair and strode over to me across the room. I involuntarily took a step back from him but found my back pressed up against the door, and suddenly he was right up in my face, practically nose to nose with me. I gulped.

"M-make me," I stammered, heart pounding. I tried to look him defiantly in the eyes to salvage any bit of confidence I had left. Before I could even realize what had happened, Draco's lips were attacking mine with so much frantic energy and passion I barely even knew how to respond. He bit down roughly on my bottom lip as he entwined one hand tightly into my hair and used the other one to press my hips back against the door. I felt like I was practically melting into his touch. I reached up to grab either side of his face, pulling him even closer to me than he already was.

Draco pulled back, the dark anger in his eyes now replaced with lust. He looked me up and down, hungrily, leaving me vulnerable under his glare.

"Oh don't worry," he growled. "I will."
