WORD COUNT: 1647
There was an air of tension about the castle, so thick you were almost swimming in it. Although it was now May, the air outside was heavy with impending rain, and the ominous rain clouds cast shadows over the grounds. I pulled my robes tighter around my chest as the unforgiving breeze blew through my thin sweater. As Head Girl, one of my duties involved patrolling the grounds at sunset to make sure that all the students were still inside the castle and weren't trying to escape to Hogsmeade.
I shuddered, thinking what the Carrows had done to the last boy they caught sneaking out. I had seen him a few times, walking the halls with his head bowed low to disguise the unsightly cuts and bruises that still decorated his face. He wasn't in my house, but I felt sorry for him anyways.
As I walked, arms crossed and wand clenched tightly in my hand, my mind began to wander. It was a trick I had learned two years ago, in Professor Umbridge's class. I was still aware of my surroundings, but my thoughts were a million miles away. I drifted into the memories of the previous summer, which I had spent at Draco's house with his family. Thinking back on all the happiness we shared warmed up my numb fingertips.
--
"Draco, I can't see anything!" I exclaimed, tugging at the fabric over my eyes. He laughed, a sound like no other, and grabbed my arm to steer me out of the way of some unseen obstacle in my path.
"Don't you trust me Y/N?" he asked. "Do you actually think I would ever let you run into anything?"
"No, but I still don't like being blindfolded. Can't you just tell me when we're getting close so I can close my eyes?"
"Well that wouldn't be as fun, would it? Besides, we're here now so it doesn't matter." I felt his hands untying the knot behind my neck and the blindfold fell away. I gasped instinctively upon seeing the scene in front of me.
Laid out in the grass of the hill behind Draco's house, right where the neatly manicured lawn met with the wild, untamed forest, was a large picnic blanket, lined with enchanted candles floating a few inches off the ground. Spread out across the blanket was the contents of an entire House table from the Hogwarts Great Hall, or so it seemed. All my favorite foods, from little bite-sized appetizers to the most decadent desserts, were neatly placed around two empty plates and champagne flutes.
With a wave of his wand, the glasses filled with bubbling champagne, and, speechless, I moved to sit down on the blanket next to him.
"Do you like it?" he asked, but he was smirking because he already knew the answer. Cocky bastard.
"Of course I do," I replied breathlessly. Draco smiled playfully. "No no no, that was the part where you're supposed to say, 'I don't like it, I love it!' You did it all wrong!" I rolled my eyes at him. He grabbed my hand within the two of his, and brought it to his lips for a tender, sweet kiss.
"You know I love you." Draco's steely grey eyes bore into mine. Even after all the time I'd spent with him, gazing into those eyes, I was still just as transfixed as the very first time I'd seen him.
"I love you too Draco," I answered. A hint of a smile crossed his lips, but it was gone almost as soon as it came.
"You know this year is going to be different, Y/N." My spirits fell a little when he started. We were having this horrible discussion... again. "I won't be around but I want you to still try your hardest to live like everything was normal." I nodded, turning my gaze to my lap to hide that my eyes were welling with tears. Of course, Draco saw right through this, and lifted my chin gently with his hand to meet his eyes once more.
