WORD COUNT: 1354
"Wake up Y/N, it's snowing!" I awoke to a rather unpleasant sensation of being squished, and a loud voice yelling in my ear. I groaned and shoved the person off, who had been jumping around on my bed.
"Leave me alone Sirius, it's so early," I complained, pulling my pillow over my face to hide my eyes. Not to be deterred, Sirius grabbed the pillow off of my face and threw it across the room.
"None of that silly, it's the first snow of the season on the first day of winter holiday and we're going to enjoy it whether you want to or not. James and Remus are already ready to go outside, we're just waiting on you and Lily," he chirped, grabbing my covers and yanking them back. I yelped in protest at the sudden cold that hit my skin, but it certainly did the trick to wake me up. Now that I was certain I wouldn't be going back to bed this morning, I rolled myself out of bed, shivering when my bare feet hit the cold stone floor of the dormitory. Sirius stood, dressed in his heavy cloak and gloves, at the foot of my bed, tapping his foot impatient. Fortunately, none of the rest of the girls were still in the room, or they probably would've had a fit, but the boys had long since learned how to bypass the no-boys-in-girls-dormitories spell.
I wandered over to my closet, pulling out a pair of jeans and a warm sweater, along with a thick pair of fuzzy socks to wear underneath my boots. I gave Sirius a twirling motion with my finger to tell him to turn around while I changed. He protested, insisting that he wouldn't look, but eventually spun around. I slipped into my clothes and grabbed my new winter boots and the long, thick cloak my grandmother had gifted me for Christmas last year. After a quick trip to the bathroom to brush my teeth and finish getting ready, I met Sirius in the common room and we headed outside to meet the rest of the Marauders, who were already out on the lawn throwing snowballs.
"You better watch your back Black, or else you'll get hit with the biggest snowball you've ever seen," I threatened him jokingly, shoving him gently with my shoulder. He shoved me back, a little harder.
"Yeah right Y/L/N, your aim's so bad you couldn't hit me with a snowball if you tried."
"Well yours is so bad I could wear a target and you'd still miss."
"If I used a Summoning Charm your snowball would still miss me."
"Ooh, good one Black, I'm impressed. Your singular thought of the day was good today, we'd better tell the others," I teased. Sirius rolled his eyes at me and pushed a lock of his dark hair out of his eyes. We met up with Lily, James, Remus and Peter in the courtyard where they were attempting to push Peter across the frozen fountain like an ice skater, except he kept losing his balance and falling.
The rest of the afternoon was spent braving the cold, clear day to build an entire army of snowpeople, have a full-on everyone-for-themselves snowball fight, then one with teams and secret alliances (and a few Jelly-Legs Jinxes) and eventually, we all collapsed into a snowbank and laid back as the light started to fade. As the shadows were growing longer over the ground, a light snowfall began to come down from the clouds, much to my delight. As I laid there with Sirius on my left and Lily on my right, I couldn't help but smile about how lucky I got with all my friends.
I felt someone's eyes on me, and I turned my head only to have my eyes meet with Sirius's dark, mysterious ones. He quickly looked away, but not quick enough for me to write it off as a coincidence. I had seen him staring at me, watching me. He always did it when he thought I wasn't looking; when I was deep in thought concentrating on an essay, or watching one of our practical jokes unfold. He never acknowledged it, and neither did I, but it was still happening and we both knew it. What he didn't know is that when he wasn't looking, I was watching him too. You can't not stare at someone when they look like Sirius Black.
When it became too dark to see the ground at our feet and too cold to feel the tips of our fingers, we decided to head inside for the holiday feast. In the Great Hall, instead of the four House tables, there was one long table, laden with the most delicious-looking food I had ever seen. I was smelling all my favorite holiday specialties - roast duck, pudding, mashed potatoes, and rosemary bread rolls. Nothing could compare to the Hogwarts holiday feast.
We sat down at the end of the table farthest away from Lucius Malfoy and his cronies and began to dig in. Sirius was sitting across from me, his cheeks and nose bright red from the sudden transition from cold into warmth. It made him look childish, and the youthful smile on his face only added to the charm. More than once, I had to remind myself that I was staring, and rip my eyes away from the figure of my beautiful best friend, sitting in front of me. My feelings aside, I knew that he would never feel the same about me, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the view.
After several servings of dinner and a couple more of dessert, and feeling approximately fifty pounds heavier than I had been when I started eating, I leaned back in my seat to stretch out my stomach. I was painfully full and very, very sleepy. As the feast wound down and everyone began to stand and walk back to their common rooms, Sirius grabbed my arm.
"Can I have a quick word? In private?" he asked, pulling me away from the rest of the group and out into the hallway in front of a painting of a basket of fruit. I could feel my heart beating in my chest, and a small part of my brain hoped that Sirius couldn't hear it from far away because of how loud it was.
"What's up?" I asked, trying to be nonchalant. Sirius smiled awkwardly, suddenly losing his smooth, cool persona. He fiddled with the fastener on his cloak absentmindedly.
"I... er... I have something to tell you," he stammered.
"Well, go ahead, you know you can tell me anything," I answered, prodding him on. There's no way this is going where I think it's going right now... is there?
"Well, to tell you the truth Y/N... I really like you, and I have for a while now. It's alright if you don't feel the same, I don't want this to get in the way of our friendship, I just wanted to -" Oh my god it totally is...
"Sirius," I interrupted him, and he stopped immediately, his eyes wide. "Would you just shut up and kiss me?" For a moment, nothing. His face didn't change, but once he processed what I had said, he smiled broadly.
"Of course," he grinned, stepping closer to me and pulling me to him. We stood chest to chest, forehead to forehead, our lips connecting and moving in perfect harmony, for what felt like an eternity. I never wanted the moment to end. Kissing Sirius just felt so... right. We had been friends forever, and now our natural chemistry had taken over and it was the most magical feeling.
Sirius pulled away and stood with his forehead glued to mine, breathing slightly heavily and grinning like an absolute madman. I knew without seeing myself that my face probably looked just as giddy.
"Well, we should probably get back to the common room, then, shouldn't we?" he asked, offering me his arm. I took it, nodding my head graciously at him.
"That we should, Sirius Black."
