Penelope's POV: I'm awake. For the first time in an long time, I'm undeniably awake. Something feels almost different today. Like I shouldn't curse the day before it begins. I welcome the day. Is the kingdom somehow brighter than before or did I just drink too much last night? Most likely the latter. There's never light in the Kingdom Of Darkness.

I shook my head before slipping my sword into my belt. Better get in there before the royal pain in the ass has my head. "You", the princess yelled, causing me to pause mid-step. Speak of the devil.

"Ma'am", I asked.

"You were meant to be here hours ago", she sneered.

"Give me a break. My cousin, Jed just died a few days ago", I pleaded, watching her face for any sign of understanding or even sympathy, but her face remained as hard as stone.

"Does it look like I care about your pathetic excuses for why you're late", she questioned. "I care that one of my guards wasn't at their station this morning", she glared. "Maybe if you quit drinking your weight in booze, things will actually get done around here", she scoffed.

"Sorry, your highness", I sighed, bowing my head before she walked off.

I glared at her retreating form before walking toward my post. How could I be foolish enough to think that any day would be brighter with the Mikaelsons around? I hate it here. The only reason I signed up for guard duty was to look after my little brother, Pedro.

It was Jed's idea to work here after our mother passed away last winter. It got so bad that Pedro had to get a job as a servant. He mostly cleans the castle, but at least he gets more food here than he ever did on the streets. Maybe I could somehow save up enough money and buy us a house one day if I'm not beheaded first...

"Excuse me, sir", I heard someone say. I looked up into brown orbs as I felt my breath catch. "You wouldn't happen to know where the kitchen is would you", they asked nervously.

"Yeah...um...down the hall to your right", I nodded.

"Thanks", they smiled.

"Are you new here", I questioned.

"Is it that obvious", they asked.

"I think I would remember a beautiful face such as yourself", I chuckled, as their face reddened.

"Uh...thanks, mister...", she trailed off as I tilted my head slightly.

"Mister", I scoffed, pulling the helmet off my head. "You think only men are capable of wielding swords", I asked.

"Oh, my apologies. I didn't realize", they frowned.

"Penelope", I said.

"What", they frowned.

"My name is Penelope", I said. "Penelope Park", I bowed dramatically.

"Josette Saltzman", she giggled, doing a small curtsy.

"Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Josette", I smirked, kissing her hand.

"Please, call me Josie", she smiled.

"See you around Jojo", I waved before she walked off.

Huh...maybe the kingdom is brighter today.
