"How's my sister?",Aunty Aminat asked as she was cutting onions for the egg.
"She's fine and she sends her greetings".
"Please pass that frying pan beside you",she said without replying to my answer.
"I had a car accident on my way to Lagos",I said without looking at her.
"What!!!!",she shouted opening her eyeballs widely as I used my side eye to look at the expression on her face.
I didnt still look her in the eye as she checked my body for any scratch.
"Why are you just telling me this and what happened exactly?"
"I didnt want to scare you since I was still alive...It was a very fatal accident and only 2 of us in the bus survived it."
"Ehh Hadiza and you are telling me this now..should we go to the hospital?".
"No oo aunty I am fine oo,The man that brought me to Lagos after the accident took me to the hospital that's why I came later than I should have".
"A man??Do you know him?".
"No he is an officer but he is the one that rescued me and the other young man from the bus".
"Yee so you followed a stranger again..what if he kidnapped you ehn..this is Lagos oo you have to shine your eye".
"He is a very nice man and he is not like that."
"Don't trust anybody o and now that you speak of this accident..what else happened before and after that?",she asked putting off what was on fire and led me to the sitting room to talk.
I explained what happened back home that made me run away and how I got on the bus to the robbery that led to the accident and all what happened after and meeting Iya Dele to give me her house address.
"Yeee Hadiza has killed me ...Were you going to ever tell me anything about it if I didnt ask you?".
"Yes Aunty but I was waiting for the right time".
"When will the right time have been?".
"Ehmm..",I didnt know what to say again after the question she asked.
"Alhamidullilahi that you are here and alive..what will have been my excuse if your mother had come here and didn't meet you".
As she said those words about my mother not meeting me if she had come here,my heart started raising at how broken she would be.Her only child gone forever...hmmn it will never happen.
"Why didnt you come back to Kano in a long time",I asked her.
"Hadiza dont let us talk about that for now..I will tell you but not now".
"Ok ma"
"I always knew my sister's husband family were evil ahhh.So the wickedness they did to her is not enough",she said again as she thought about what I told her before.
"How was your results?"
"Very good",I said smiling.
"You had all your papers?"
"Yes Aunty".
"I trust you just like my sister Aishat that likes book".
I just smiled to her and picked up the throw pillow that fell.I didnt want to tell her about the accident or anything because I thought it was in the past and shouldnt hinder the present.
"Hadiza what are you thinking about?".
"Nothing ma"
"I have called you once before and you are sitted just next to me".
"I didn't know ma".
"Ok let us get back to the kitchen to cook so that I can use that one to point out some of the things and how to use them ehn".
She showed me how to use the gas cooker, microwave and she was happy I got it faster than she thought meanwhile she lamented almost every minute about what I told her.
"Ehh Lisa will not believe it if I told her what you said because you dont even like one who an insect bit talkless of getting involved in an accident".
"I was treated in the hospital even if it was just a slight scratch".
"Ehnehn".
"You speak so well Aunty Aminat".
"I furthered my education in Lagos here even though it is a polythecnic and I studied hard to come out with good results.
"Wow,I want to go to the university to study Gynaecology".
"You are a bookworm oo and this is what I was telling my sister then",she said saying the last sentence in a very low tone.
By the time we stopped talking, the food was served and it seemed like I had never eaten anything that tasted so delicious like that.I had to take it easy while eating to avoid looks from my aunty.Aunty Aminat went in to get dressed for her outing with Aunty Lisa while I cleaned everywhere since it was weekend.
"Close the doors and don't open the door for anyone until I get back o around 6pm..bye then".
"Bye ma".
I slept off on the couch after checking the nook and cranny of the house.
