"I knew that if I ever broke her heart, it was not because I could not love her, but because I had been damaged. And being in love is so damned terrifying when your bones have already been torn."

Niall's POV

It's after noon and I'm at my office, trying to focus on my work but I barely manage to. My mind rushes back to Ana every few minutes and I lose every ounce of focus.

I don't know what had happened but Ana has been a little distant lately. It's like we barely spend any time together. She comes home late from work and sleeps as soon as she does, attesting that she's really tired. She goes to work early in the morning, leaving a note on the kitchen island or a message, before I even wake up and never replies to my texts while at work. Now I know what she must felt like.

I have sent a couple of texts to Ana a few hours ago but I haven't received a reply yet, as usual. Assuming that she might have missed it, I send her another one.

I'm thinking about you x

I try to busy myself with my work but I cannot really cope so I think about surprising Ana at her house. She mentioned that she was going to go there after work to get some stuff, yesterday.

And since Ana hasn't texted me back, it gives me all the more reasons why I should do something for us so that we can spend some time together. Even though it's pretty early and maybe she wouldn't be there for at least the next few hours, I decide to go anyways. I plan on sleeping for a couple of hours, for I couldn't sleep last night, before making something for us and having a proper, romantic date night, with scented candles, just the way she likes it.

A huge grin spreads on my face just at the thought of our unplanned date night. I know I'd probably look clingy but I really miss her very much and I just want to spend time with her. I just wanna have a nice, relaxed dinner with my girlfriend and talk about absolutely everything.

I rummage through my pocket, hoping that I have her house keys with me. A satisfied smile spreads on my face when I find it. I put all the work files in order, turn off my computer before picking up my car keys and walking out of my cabin. I call her a couple of times, just to be sure but she doesn't pick up. I shake it off, thinking that she's busy, and try not to take it to heart.

"You're leaving so early?" Tris asks me as I reach the reception. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah. I just feel a bit stressed is all," I answer. It's not all lie, I do feel stressed. "Tell Dave to take care of all the paperwork I've kept on my table and to look after the inauguration preparations and report it back to me by tomorrow. It's just a week away and I want everything to be perfect." She nods. Since Logan is on a vacation, Tris and Dave took over his work to help me out. "Are the invitations sent out?"

"Yes, Niall. It's been taken care of," She replies and I nod.

"And when is Logan coming back to work?"

"In less than a week," She answers and I let out a satisfactory breath. "C'mon, we weren't that bad." She feigns hurt, keeping her palm against her heart, and I cackle.

"I know. You guys were great," I compliment them. They were, indeed, a great help.

"Okay." She laughs and I nod. "See ya, Niall. Take care." She waves at me and I do the same before walking out of my office.
