10 years. It's been 10 years since Namjoon felt something like this for someone else. And what he experienced in the past wasn't even close to what he's feeling for Jimin right now.
After telling the boy that he likes him, the pilot felt a rush of hope enter his entire being, making him feel that maybe, just maybe, he wasn't so broken and wounded after all.
Flashback to 2010
"God, Namjoon, not another rap battle," his girlfriend whined. "Why do you insist on joining these things? It's not like you're gonna earn tons of money from it anyway."
Sighing, Namjoon turned to the pouting girl, who was angrily shoving her books into her bag. "I told you that I gotta do this. And it's not just another battle, it's against Gloss, he's a big deal-"
"Fuck that," the girl spat out. "You and your stupid rapping! And can you do something about your hair? It's so goddamn embarrassing to be seen with you!"
"Why do you always have to be like that?" asked Namjoon as he followed his girlfriend out of their classroom.
"Listen here," the girl said while viciously poking his chest with a finger. "You should be grateful that I'm still with you. Do you know how many guys in this entire school want to be with me? I'm sure they'd rather spend time with me than go to some stupid rap battle with other hip hop wannabes."
"Babe," Namjoon weakly said. "I'm sorry, ok? Look, it's just that I want to see how far I can go with this. I really think I have a shot at a career in music, I really d-"
"Why? Just because some former JYP employee handed you a card, now you think you've got what it takes to be a real artist?" the girl sneered. "Wake up Namjoon, you don't have the looks to make it in the industry."
Tears started to form in Namjoon's eyes, but he hastily brushed them away.
"God, you think I don't know that?" Namjoon replied. "I'm not dreaming about becoming an idol or an actor. I want to be a rap artist. And yeah, so I don't have a face like an idol, I'm sorry babe. But I don't think I have to be handsome to become a rapper."
The girl laughed derisively. Flipping her long hair over her shoulder, she fired back, "Fuck, you're one delusional loser, you know that? You know what you're good at? Fucking! For a scrawny ass nerd you're actually good at that, thank fuck you've got a big dick."
Flabbergasted, Namjoon cried out, "Is that all I am to you?"
"And you've got brains," she continued, ignoring her boyfriend's outburst. "Use your fucking brains for once and think about becoming someone important after we graduate. You could be a lawyer. Or a doctor. Shame you weren't born into a rich family, but still, you could put that high IQ of yours to good use and actually do something that matters, instead of rapping."
Namjoon looked at her disbelievingly. He's used to all of his girlfriend's spiteful comments, her backhanded insults, and the way she dismissed his hopes and dreams. But now, she was just being downright mean.
"Why are you being so mean?" Namjoon implored.
"I'm not being mean," the girl sighed in irritation. "I'm being realistic. I need you to wake up. I have big dreams too, you know. I've got what it takes to make it happen. And if we're going to be together, I need you to step up your game and catch up."
Namjoon wanted to say something, anything to disprove his girlfriend's words, but in his heart, he knew that she was speaking the truth. His girlfriend is pretty, and when she wasn't being a raging bitch, she could be charming as hell too. Guys were always swarming around her, and she reveled in all the attention. She especially liked it when older men would do a double take after seeing her, and she would preen and giggle whenever a man in an expensive-looking suit would openly stare at her.
