"Why the hell does he have it on a pedistal stabbed in the ground?" Dean grumbled as he stood up and took a tentative step inside the circle of powder.
"Maybe because he's the biggest douche on the planet?" I suggested, following him and motioning for Sam to follow. I had to wave my hands in front of his face for him to drop the powder and start walking.
"Is that another tablet?" Sam asked shaking the fog of his mental search trying to identify the powder.
"Looks like it." Dean called back.
"Why would he leave it out in the open though?" I wondered, "Don't you think if he had a tablet he would guard it with everything he had?"
I regretted my words imediately when four angels materialized around the tablet. One of them I recognized from my first run in with angel warding but the other three looked pathetic. It's no wonder they were put on guard duty, they looked frail and slightly terrified as they nervously spun their angel blades in hand.
"Who broke the line?" The bigger one asked taking a step forward and looking at me in expectation.
Dean raised his hand like he was in class, "That was me." He confessed with a proud smirk.
How has this idiot survived after all the sass he gives to things?
"You will die first." The angel anounced as he raised his blade and advanced on Dean.
"Whoa whoa whoa hold on!" Sam stepped in front of Dean holding his arms out as both Dean and I went for our weapons.
"There is nothing to hold on to." One of the other angels observed looking at Sam in confusion. The other angels shared a look of confusion and the big one rolled his eyes.
"It was a phrase used to pau-" he didn't finish his sentence because Sam had an angel blade stuck in his chest.
The other angles advanced but they didn't get far. I blocked a slash from one, ducking inside his arm span and smiting him instantly.
One snuck up behind me and held a knife to my back, "What do you want with the instructions?"she growled as Sam finished the remaining angel.
"We want to use them?" I sassed back hoping she would spill something else.
"Even with instructions you cannot complete the tasks needed to retrieve your friend's grace." She sneered.
At this point Sam and Dean were rushing towards me but they stopped when the angel readjusted her blade to point right over my heart.
"It's alright guys," I sighed reaching up and tapping the angel's forehead igniting her eyes, "she forgot to grab my hands."
"Having a superhero as a fiancé must be pretty nice there Sammy." Dean chuckled with a pat on the back as he walked back over to the wooden pedistal.
I rolled my eyes at his comment and picked up the angel blades.
"The comment was very Marvel of you." Sam commented with a grin when I joined them by the tablet.
I grinned and side hugged him whispering as I did so, "you kept him clean?"
Sam nodded with a look of apprehension that he quickly masked and moved out of my grasp to inspect the tablet.
"You see anything weird about it Sammy?" Dean asked as he bent over to look at it, "Other than the theatrical placement."
"Not that I can see..." Sam mutter as he reached out to grab the stone. When he touched it there was an angry sizzling sound followed by a surprised shout of pain as Sam jerked his hands back.
"Shit that was hot!" He groaned shaking his hands out after inspecting them.
"He probably put a spell on it because he knew his angels sucked." I muttered.
I reached out to hover my hand over it like you do with a pan to see if it's hot but there was nothing. I furrowed my brow and poked it quickly so as not to singe my finger off but the stone felt cold.
"Dean does it feel hot to you?" I asked grabbing his wrist and holding it above the stone.
"Yeah. Let go of my hand I need that." He griped jerking his hand back.
"Why? Doesn't if feel hot to you?" Sam asked looking up from his hands.
I shook my head and laid my full hand on it, still nothing.
Picking it up and turning it over in my hands seemed to make it colder if anything else.
Sam came around the other side of the pedistal and held his hand over it, "Still hot. How...?"
"She's me!" Dad trilled from behind me.
My grip on the tablet tightened and I could see the boy's jaws clench.
"What do you mean 'I'm you'?" I snapped turning to face him but making my body language clear I wasn't offering him the tablet.
"You're part angel sweet cheeks. He put a spell on that so only angles could touch it and not get seared." dad sighed walking up to us as if we were incapable toddlers he was trying to make do his chores.
"Hand it here we'll see what his diary says." He demanded, holding his hand out in expectation.
"You played me again." I stated dryly as I clutched the tablet closer to my body, "You withheld information and you didn't warn us about anything."
Sam rested his hand on the small of my back trying to calm me down.
"Must be why you relate to these numbskulls so well. Now hand it over." Dad took a step forward.
"That's not going to fly." I growled and glared at his forehead willing it to explode again.
He winced, "Evelynn, I swear to your grandfather-"
"You know what? I don't care." I interrupted walking past him to the door, "call me when you're ready to have a healthy relationship." I called over my shoulder and Sam and Dean strided to catch up with me.
We drove back to the motel in silence, the boys letting me stew in my disappointment and rage.
When we got there I scared the shit out of Harper by throwing the door open and letting out a shriek of anger.
"What the hell?" Harper snapped, sitting up more from her position against the headboard of the bigger bed.
"My dad." I sighed throwing the tablet on the smaller of the two beds in the room, "By the way don't touch that." I warned her as I gathered up my stuff to take a shower.
I turned the water as hot as the dial would let me and tried to let it wash away my anger and worries.
I really did a number on myself this week. A teenager, a tablet and Dad... and I still have to pick a venue for the wedding. Fuck.
My shower wasn't as calming as I had hoped and walking out of the bathroom to find not three other people but four wasn't helpful either.
Harper was now asleep where she had been watching TV earlier and Dean was sitting at her feet glaring over at the doorway. Sam was stood up in between Dad and the other two having a stare down .
"Fuck Dad what do you want?" I moaned shoving my toiletries into my bag and whipping around waiting for him to respond.
"Your move Samuel." He taunted, completely ignoring me.
"Get out." Sam growled. I hadn't found him intimidating in a while but the daggers he was staring at Dad made me glad he was facing away from Harper.
"You need me to read that tablet, Jumbo. And I need that tablet to fix my home." Dad folded his arms and widened his stance as if he was daring Sam to try to move him.
Dean stood up and got between the two of them, "Okay calm down a little guys. Sam, go sit down." Dean pushed on his chest and pointed to a chair in the corner of the room.
"Dad. Outside. Now." I forced through gritted teeth.
"Sure thing Darlin." He said with a fake smile, turning on his heel and leading the way out to the balcony walkway.
"You need to stop this." I started.
"Stop what?"
"Stop being a big bag of dicks. Pick a fucking side for God's sake!" I yelled.
"Don't take your grandfather's name in vain." He smirked, proud of himself for his little joke.
"Oh fuck you! I'm glad you weren't around when I was growing up. You're a douche. I don't know what stick you've got shoved up your ass but you need to pull it out. There's no way we are giving you that tablet so you can pick up your pride and leave and we will find someone else to translate it for us or you can do it and be civil okay?" I may have been channeling a little bit of my mom but the desired effect was acomplished and he closed his mouth.
Our angry silence was broken when Dean slipped out the door, "No one's dead out here right?"
"Oh he's lucky he's still alive." I muttered.
"I'll translate your tablet. Hell I never said I wouldn't, but you need to jump off that high horse of yours Evelynn." Dad almost scolded.
We had a brief stare down where I tried to give him a headache again.
Eventually he rolled his eyes and sighed, "Tell me when you get home and I will pop over. You might have a problem with your new friend."
"What happened while I was in the shower?" I asked running my hands through as I turned to Dean.
His face turned almost to panic and he kind of fidgeted, "Uh... Just some pre-apocalypse stuff that Gabe was still pissed about. Nothing important."
I sighed and leaned against the railing, "Relatives suck."
"Just think, you get to walk down the aisle with that." Dean winked.
"At this rate, I'm walking myself." I laughed.
We chuckled and let the bitterly humorous note hang in the air, completely content with the silence.
We were jarred out of our thoughts when Sam's panicked yell came from inside the room.
"EHVS! HELP!"
