We fell into a rhythm over the next few months. Harper went to school while we looked for a few of the spell ingredients, which were surprisingly hard to find, and we would wedding plan when she got home until dinner.
She still wouldn't leave Sam's side unless she absolutely had to but it was becoming more of a preference rather than a coping mechanism.
On weekends we would take off and try to retrieve whatever spell ingredient we could but a lot of them were hard to get. Every once in a while we would run across Jael, usually on a fairly difficult search, and she would immediately jump out of our way as if she was trying not to be seen. Granted we weren't the friendliest hunters towards most angels, but her behavior kind of concerned me.
About three months after school started we all came home after one of our weekend escapades, completely exhausted but in possession of the crocodile eye lenses.
"Harpie! Why do I smell something burning?!" I yelled as I hurried down the stairs and poked my head in the kitchen.
"It's just toast Ma." She called from the library.
Sam and I exchanged a confused look, "She never calls you ma or mom unless there's someone from school around." He noted.
I told her specifically no friends in the bunker ever.
I frowned and hurried into the library to see Harper with her feet up on the desk talking on the phone with her calc homework completely forgotten on the table.
"Harper it's ten at night." Dean observed ever so grouchily as he strolled past behind Sam and I.
Harper rolled her eyes, "Hey listen Maddie I have to go, all three parental units just got home and I haven't done any homework." She paused and I could hear a laugh and some kind of phrase of agreement, "alright see you tomorrow! Yeah I'll totally ask about the homecoming thing!"
When she hung up I crossed my arms, "Haven't done any homework huh?"
"I know! I'm fucked! I'll stay up and get it done..." She groaned as she leaned forward over her text book.
"And next time Maddie calls I'm telling her you aren't here." I added.
"Seriously?!" She protested.
"Seriously. Seriously." I smiled real sweet like and crossed over to the table with the spell ingredient list.
"Way to quote Shrek Ehvs." Sam chuckled as he took off towards the kitchen.
"How many more do we need?" Harper asked.
"All the weird ones." I sighed, "where the hell am I supposed to get a 200 year old baby skull or petrified rose petals? Do those even exist?!"
There was a flap of angel wings and Harper let out a small shriek letting me know Dad had shown up uninvited.
"I translated that wrong. It's petrified olive tree." He state almost apologetically.
"That's a little easier to find." I shrugged crossing out the incorrect words and re writing the correct ingredient.
"Yeah, uhm... Evelynn can I talk to you?" Dad asked shifting his weight back and forth and for the first time since I'd met him he looked solemn. Sure he had gotten serious, but never a sad serious.
"Sure...?" I gave him a careful expression, "let's leave Harper to her homework though."
I led dad down a few halls to the one place the boys never went, the laundry room.
"What?" I asked as I spun on him and put my hands on my hips.
"Sucky or hopeful first?" Dad asked crossing his arms and faking all of his confidence.
I really don't want to hear the sucky at all.
"Hopeful."
"I think I know a place you can get the baby skull and witch's tongue." He spilled with a terse sigh.
"Awesome where?" I exclaimed as I whipped my phone out ready to put in the coordinates or at least the town.
"Jacksonville Florida. But Evel-"
"Great! Thanks dad! I need to go tell the boys." I bubbled as I typed the information into my phone and tried to walk past him.
He stepped in front of me and gripped my shoulders, making sure I was still before he moved.
"Later. I need to tell you something." He huffed as he closed the door and took a deep breath as if he were nervous.
"Dad..... We need to get this spell. We've got enough trouble with Cas being dead I don't need any bombs right now." I dismissed him before forgoing steps and teleporting to the kitchen where lo and behold Dean was raiding the fridge.
"Got a lead! Who knew tricksters could actually be helpful!" I announced scaring Dean into slamming his head into the roof of the fridge.
"Damnit Gingy!" Dean exclaimed. "We just got back from the last one!"
"We can sleep and leave in the morning grouchy pants! We gotta hit up Jacksonville though." I insisted, turning around to find Dad standing right in front of me.
"Evelynn we need to talk." He reiterated.
"Later." I grunted as I pushed past him, "Harper you're going to miss tomorrow!"
She poked her head out of the library, "Does this mean I get to come?" She asked with a giant pleading smile stretching across her features.
"No."
"Oh come ooooooon! I just spent all weekend alone with my homework! Pleaaase?" She begged.
"It's actually a fairly calm area as far as angel/demon activity goes...." Dad offered earning himself a death glare and a headache.
"See? Your dad agrees!"Harper argued.
"I said no. This is not something you want to start Harpie." I warned her as I kept on walking down the hall.
"Then why am I staying home?! Shouldn't I go to school!?" She called after me.
"Because it's safer!" I called over my shoulder.
I nearly bowled right through Dad as I rounded a corner and he was waiting for me.
"Talk. Now." He demanded.
"After we get everything ready to leave in the morning." I relented pushing him aside.
I found Sam and told him to pack up while Dad reluctantly gave me the information on where and how to get what we need.
Everything was packed and ready within the hour and everyone but Dad and I had gone to sleep.
"Now will you talk?" Dad asked as I settled into a plush chair in the library.
I nodded, sipping my calming tea and looking up at him.
He pulled a chair around and straddled it backwards making sure to be close enough to stop my exit.
"How much do you know about your fiancé?" He asked.
What is he getting at?
"A hell of a lot." I answered crossing my arms.
"And he knows everything about you?" Dad asked beginning to sound like a prosecuting attorney.
"Pretty much yeah...."
"You read those books?" Dad asked.
I nodded again letting him continue.
"There's something that wasn't in the books." Dad paused and took a deep breath as I cocked one eyebrow at him, "I'm honestly surprised he hasn't told you but you need to know this. Sam was a demon blood junkie."
I paused for a moment, my mind completely blanked for a good three seconds.
"What do you mean?" I asked with double my average dose of concern.
"I mean he drank the blood of demons and used the powers that he got from it to do some pretty crazy stuff then wrestle with Luci and throw him in the cage." Dad elaborated.
I pursed my lips and sat forward in my chair, "I don't see how him locking up the devil is a bad thing."
"He got addicted and went completely off the Rez. Doin his dealer, smiting and exorcising demons with his mind, extra lying to Dean, starting the apocalypse kinda off the Rez." Dad emphasized.
I stayed quiet a moment and let his words sink in.
"Just thought you should know that if you're getting married to him." Dad whispered as he stood and kissed my forehead before disappearing.
