Dead. The word was still ringing in Beth's ears. It was yet to make its impact to her heart. Almost an hour had passed since she'd been told of her father's death yet Beth still hadn't reacted to it. Dex had actually showed more emotion to it than Beth herself. He'd held her in his arms with some sort of sympathy and kept her in their room to cry or give whatever reaction of breakdown she could. Beth did none of that. Instead, she found herself silently trying to put the pieces of what had happened together.
Dex explained to her that Ferdinand and his men had found Duncan struggling to get up from the ground on his back yard. All of them were still trying to figure out how Duncan had managed to pass their security into the property and who had beaten and left him to waste. It was quite obvious that Duncan had just been involved in a fight or attack of some sort before invading their home. The big question was why he'd come there. Could it be he only wanted protection like Dex said, or did he want to ask for her forgiveness? A hint of hurt surfaced at the thought of Duncan having possibly wanted to apologize to her. Why else would a man near death show up at the door of the daughter he had long forgotten?
'What is it?' Dex asked Beth softly when he saw the confused looks playing on her face.
'I still don't feel the loss or hurt. Does that make me a horrible person?'
'No. It makes you normal. You weren't attached to him.' Dex responded placing a small peck on Beth's head.
'Something doesn't make sense about this. Why would someone dump him here when he's almost dead?' Beth thought out loud.
'The police are talking to my men about what they know. If they find anything they'll tell us.'
Dex said stroking Beth's hair. Beth let out a heavy breath and fell more into Dex's hold. Dex moved his hands slowly until that stopped over her belly.
'Don't think too much about it. You don't want to get too upset.' He said. Beth turned herself to face him not loosening from his hold. A moment of silence passed as Beth and Dex just looked at each other. Their faces coming closer and closer to each other with each second. Their warm breaths mingled together as their lips touched slowly.
'Excuse us Mr. Venom but we have to take you in for further questioning at the station.' Neither Beth nor Dex had heard or seen the two policemen come in. Although Dex tensed at what had just been said, he didn't let go of Beth. He turned to face the two men though.
'What more do you need to know?'
'We have reason to consider you a suspect. You may remain silent or anything you say may be used against you in court.' One police officer said advancing for Dex with hand cuffs in his hands. They both seemed to have a lot of hesitation to what they were about to do.
'Okay. Whatever you need to ask me better not take forever because I can't leave my wife alone overnight.' Dex said.
'He didn't do it.' Beth said pulling Dex to herself as though to protect him from the advancing officer.
'Mam, we'd really appreciate if you step out of the way.'
'No. Where he goes, I go too.' Beth said seeming more and more afraid with each word. Her hands were shaking and Dex could feel it where she was touching him.
'Give me a minute.' He said to the officers. They actually nodded in respect and told Dex they would give him only a minute before leaving the room to wait outside the door.
