Rubbing her eyes and groaning in frustration, Beth reached for her ringing mobile from the drawer top. She looked at the screen and frowned, too sleepy to read the caller ID.

She hit the answer button and pressed for loudspeaker. She then threw her head back on the pillow. Before she could tuck herself back  into the covers, she heard the least expected voice coming from the phone. Her heart sank with fear too as she heard the sorrowful cries for help. Cries of desperation and deadly fear.

Her mind quickly played her traumatic moments when she was captured by Victor and his men and the way she'd cried for help. In those moments, she'd felt utterly helpless.

'Hillary, what's wrong?' She asked with panicked concern. Her hands quickly sought out and switched on the lamp.

'Help! He's taking my kids. Beth please help me.' Hillary continued to echo those words over and over again, not allowing Beth a chance to speak.

'I'm calling the police.' Beth shouted grabbing the landline and immediately punching in the emergency number. The call was answered at the first ring. Beth started to speak breathlessly with worry for Hillary and the kids.

As she spoke, Hillary's next words froze her whole being. She stopped speaking, stopped moving and just stilled there in shock.

'What did you say?' She asked Hillary in a disbelieving whisper. Hillary sniffed into her ear via the mobile phone.

'It's Dex. He's taking my kids away from me. If you call the police I'll never get them back.' Hillary cried. Beth was too stunned to speak. She tried to deny it, but deep down she knew this was most likely true. The look Dex had worn on his face when he'd told her about Hillary's involvement with Victor was vicious. It had spoken a promise of relentless vengeance to come.

Beth had thought her husband momentarily angry as expected at such news. But the rest of the day had passed and night welcomed with him still wearing that look. He'd hardly spoke a word, but he'd subtly told Beth he'd serve Hillary a worthy reward for her betrayal.

Beth had expected his anger, she too was hurt and angry that Hillary would do such a thing to her. Listening to Hillary now though, her cries were a revelation of Beth's underestimated judgement of Dex's wrath.

The moment of shock for Beth was destroyed by the voice of the emergency calls operator who was still speaking on the landline.

'Everything's fine.' She said softly to the operator. He asked a few more times if she was ok, and after a few satisfying answers from Beth, he hung up.

'Beth, are you there? I can't be on the phone for long. Dex has his men packing away my children's stuff. I can't fight him. I don't have what it takes. Please talk to him, help me.' With that, Denver's sweet voice softly bid his mum farewell, with excitement at going away to his uncle's.

Hillary screamed and the phone the line went dead. Beth only noticed she was now standing when she put her phone down

She repeatedly paced to the door and back. Her mind started to wonder trying to piece together the recent happenings.

She looked around the room trying to come up with an explanation for it all. Her eyes landed on the large bed she'd been sleeping in. Dex's side was undisturbed. No crease or fold to hint recent occupation.
