Nishinoya grabbed the tape and went to self-checkout to purchase it. As he paid, he noticed how oddly empty the store was. No one is in here at all...
A heavy knot made its way to the bottom of his stomach. All of a sudden, he heard glass shattering and the owner of the small shop shoved him into a closet. His head smacked against the doorframe, and he collapsed, no longer able to hear the horrors on the other side of the closed door.
Nishinoya woke up to silence and a throbbing pain in his arm and head. As he attempted to sit up, he leaned on his hand and immediately fell back down, grunting in pain. He had broken his arm once in the third grade, and this felt awfully similar. It was his dominant arm too, which was quite annoying. I won't be able to play volleyball for at least a month! He thought in anger as he finally managed to get up and push open the door.
He just as quickly slammed it shut. What had awaited him on the other side was the corpse of the store owner, and a myriad of...were those zombies? This is bad! He thought. No food, no water, no toilet, and a broken arm. It must have happened during the fall! What will I do? What will everyone else do?
Are they even alive?
Hinata shook with fear as Daichi locked the closet and gently pulled Hinata closer to him. "You'll be fine," he whispered, "But we have to be quiet right now. Okay?" Hinata nodded and started to cry silently. Daichi protectively put his arms around Hinata in a fatherly hug. "And I'm sure everyone else is fine too." He rubbed soothing circles on Hinata's back and they sat there, alone and in the dark.
Asahi locked the door to the club room and turned off the lights. "Come here," he told Yamaguchi, and lifted a few boxes to reveal a small hatch. "There's a safe room here if we need, okay?" Yamaguchi nodded and Asahi put the boxes back. "We'll be fine in the club room for now, but let's sleep in the bunker if we can. There's enough food and water in there to last twenty people a year, along with sleeping bags and a few spare sets of clothes." Yamaguchi flashed Asahi a shaky thumbs up, then curled up in a corner and cried. Asahi muted all the phones in the club room, then did the same.
Kiyoko slammed the door shut and led Ennoshita and Yachi to the very back of the locker room, where there was a bathroom and five showers. "We're probably going to have to scavenge for food, but usually the track club leaves plenty of snacks, so that'll last us a few days." Yachi nodded. "I know this is gonna be hard," Kiyoko said, "But we will get through this. I don't know what we're facing yet, but I promise I will protect you. For now, everyone get into a stall, lock the door, and stand on the rim of the toilet seat."
"Kinoshita, Narita, get inside the closet over there. I'm gonna try to find some contraband to defend ourselves with if we need to," Sugawara said. The two second years nodded and quickly made their way into the closet. As Suga scanned the lounge, he saw a box. After opening it and seeing a Swiss Army knife, a loaded airsoft gun with an extra bottle of bullets, and multiple expandable batons, he closed the lid and brought it into the closet with him, giving Narita the knife, Kinoshita the batons, and keeping the airsoft pistol for himself.
Kageyama and Tsukishima had been dead silent the entire time. Tanaka shifted uncomfortably, then whispered, "Listen, if you two need to run and leave me behind, you will. Do you understand?" A short silence, then they both whispered words of understanding. "Good," Tanaka replied, "Now let's all shut up and wait until this shit show is over."
Food, Nishinoya thought, how will I get food? Food and water are my two priorities. How well do I know this store? Well, I know that right next to this closet is a section full of energy drinks. Until I find water, they're better than nothing. For food, there's plasticware if I need it, and a frozen foods section near the energy drinks. Ice cream has protein, right? Are there weapons I can use? He looked around. A broom, a few boxes, and a shopping cart with a broken wheel. Using his left hand, he grabbed the broom and let his right arm hang limply in the cart. Ignoring the pain in favor of adrenaline, he cracked open the door to the closet, then burst out, kicking it closed behind him. He used the broom to knock as many energy drinks into the cart as possible, then swung it in front of him, knocking zombies out of his way. He turned sharply, letting out a small yelp (this was not good for his arm) and threw bags of chips, ramen packets, anything he could into his cart, then ran back to his closet at full speed.
The food heist had been a success.
As the night came and went, the others began to get hungry as well. They each began to formulate plans based on where they were positioned in the school. Asahi and Yamaguchi cracked open their food stores, whilst setting up their sleeping bags. "Asahi-san," Yamaguchi said quietly, "When do you think this will end?" "I don't know," Asahi replied, "But we will get through it, and everyone else will too."
"You two," Sugawara said, "We need to find food if we can. Come with me, and bring your weapons. Let's try the cafeteria first." He made sure his airsoft gun was loaded, then turned off safety and cocked it back.
"Ennoshita-kun, Hitoka-chan," Kiyoko whispered, "It's been about 12 hours. We need to find food." "I think the best place would be the cafeteria," Yachi responded. Ennoshita nodded in agreement. "Is there anything we can use for defense if the situation comes to it?" "Right next to here is a closet with supplies for the girl's softball team. For now, we stick together and bring a bag to hold the food."
As Kiyoko scanned their surroundings, she noticed something.
"New plan," she said, shaken. "Wear long sleeves and cover as much skin as you can. I think...I think those are zombies."
Sugawara looked around. "Oh...shit..." he muttered. "Kinoshita-kun, Narita-kun, I swear I'm not messing with you right now, but, uh... I think this might be a zombie apocalypse. So, ah, I'm gonna take out as many as I can long-range with this thing and we're gonna book it to the cafeteria, okay?" The two second years, although terrified, nodded stiffly. "Okay, good," Sugawara said, "Because I do not want to do this alone."
Suga opened the door, took aim, and pulled the trigger at the walking corpse in front of him.
