To ChicagoCat21 ,for finally watching Haikyuu.
I told you it was good.
Hinata awoke to chirping birds and, from what he could see out of that tiny window, a bright blue sky, littered with puffy white and wispy clouds. He shivered. He'd offered to sleep by the windows, where it was coldest, so that no one else had to, but that meant he woke up freezing every morning, since it was nearing winter. I hope this winter is a warm one, he thought as he silently added another mark to his mental calendar. That makes twenty-seven days. Twenty-seven since this began, nineteen since Asahi-san, Suga-san, and Daichi-san saved Nishinoya-san, and two days since Nekoma and Fukurodani found their way here. Twenty-seven days. That's almost a month.
A month is a really long time.
He shivered again.
And it's getting colder too.
The cold wind bit against his skin as he sat up. Winter was approaching, and fast. It wasn't a good sign. Winter meant sickness and freezing temperatures and low food supply. Hinata didn't want to admit it, but...
He was scared.
He'd seen the faces of the third years, whispering nervously as they planned their next food run. He'd seen Tanaka, devoid of emotion, a shell of his former self. He's seen Nishinoya, making vain attempts to cheer him up. He'd seen Sugawara, who had a look of worry on his face every time someone came out of the gym. They were all thinking the same thing.
Who's gonna die next?
Kageyama put an arm around Hinata and the small boy leaned into the bigger one. He hadn't noticed the ravenette arrive, but was thankful for his presence. It was warm. Comforting.
"Kageyama-kun."
"Yeah?"
"Do you think this will ever end?"
"I don't know. I hope so."
"Yeah. Me too."
Yamaguchi joined them next, a few minutes later.
"Hey," he said, "Remember when we used to practice here?"
"Yeah, I do," Hinata replied. "I would palm a volleyball right there, and Nishinoya would receive it, and pass it to Suga, who'd set it to Asahi. He'd slam it through and score, putting them at set point, and we'd call you in."
"And then," Yamaguchi said, "I'd score a few points-"
"Ten points!"
"Fine, ten points-"
"And then we'd win because Kageyama is an awesome setter, I'm an awesome spiker, and Yamaguchi is an awesome server."
"And Yachi would cheer on the sidelines."
"And Nishinoya and Tanaka would try to make out with Kiyoko."
"And fail."
"And fail. And then Daichi would tell them off."
"And Suga would calm Daichi down."
"Because they're dating."
"Because they're dating."
A few hours later, Sugawara gathered everyone together. "I've decided," he said, that we're all gonna go out together for a supply run."
Nishinoya sighed.
"Ennoshita will stay with you, Nishinoya-kun."
"It's fine. He can go."
"No. He's staying."
"Fine."
"Okay, everyone pack onto the bus. I know we usually run there, but there are too many people and someone might get hurt."
The gym doors slammed shut, silence echoing in its wake.
"I'm going to the bathroom."
"Be fast."
Nishinoya walked out of the gym, and took a deep breath.
Then, he ran out to follow the bus.
Sugawara was feeling guilty about leaving Noya behind. That much, Daichi could tell. But, the wing spiker thought the setter had made the right choice, and was smart to leave Ennoshita, a levelheaded, smart, and stubborn second year, with him. As they pulled up to the store, Daichi noted how much emptier it was. There was still plenty, but he'd have to plan with Suga to look for alternatives.
"Everyone out!" Suga shouted. "I'll take the rear!"
They crept into the store. "Grab the perishable foods first," Daichi said to no one in particular.
"Okay."
Daichi stiffened, and Suga whipped around.
"Nishinoya!"
