"Okay," Kiyoko said, "We need to find other survivors." Yachi stopped what she was doing and looked up at her. "What?" "You heard me," Kiyoko said, "We need to find other survivors so that we can band together." Ennoshita was sitting on a bench near them. "What you're saying is we need to get out of this locker room and into the real world." "Kind of," Kiyoko responded, "What I'm saying is that there is a chance that everyone else is still alive and hiding in this school somewhere. If we find someone, especially if we find Sugawara-kun, we'll be a lot better off than we are here." "Okay," Yachi said, "But why Suga-san?"
"Well," Kiyoko said, "Because of a few events in his past, he's an exceptionallly good survivalist."
"Like?"
"Well, for one, he knows how to use a weapon."
"Okay."
"He's also a Boy Scout and used to be a counselor for the camp."
"Wow."
"And he's first-aid certified for multiple life-saving maneuvers, like CPR."
"Okay, so find Sugawara-san?"
"If we can."
"Are there any other good options?"
"Well, any of the other third years, for pure brute strength."
"Makes sense."
"Narita-kun is very cool-headed, and he's pretty strong and fast as well."
"So we should focus on Sugawara-san or Narita-kun?"
"And Narita-kun." Ennoshita walked towards them. "They went with Kinoshita to go grab some supplies for the practice game. If all works out, they'll all be together and well." Yachi nodded. "Okay. Where should we look first?" "Well," Ennoshita began, "I don't know where they would be, but for sure someone is in the club room. It's an obvious choice, with the lockable doors and the safe room."
"Safe room?"
"Oh, uh, yeah, the, ah, the club room has a small bomb shelter because this school was built during one of the world wars."
"That makes sense."
"...Yeah."
"Anyway," Kiyoko interrupted, "Our best shot at survival is finding someone else and sticking with them." "You're right," Yachi said, "But how do we get to the club room?" "Well," Kiyoko grimaced, "I think we'll just have to run." Outside, strange noises could be heard. They seemed to make their way into the foreground as Yachi swallowed nervously.
"O-kay. What do we do first?"
After bags had been packed, and they had put on as much clothing as possible to cover their skin, they grabbed their weapons. "Hitoka-chan," Kiyoko began, "Go in the middle. Ennoshita-kun, front or back?" "I'll take the back," Ennoshita said, "and make sure no one falls behind, but if I fall, I don't care what I tell you, keep running." Okay?"
The two girls nodded and suddenly Ennoshita, Kiyoko, and Yachi were on their way.
Hopefully they wouldn't die.
Yamaguchi sprung up at the sound of the door smashing out of its hinges and crashing to the floor. Asahi quickly closed and locked the safe door as the two boys backed up into the corner of the bunker, trembling with fear. All of a sudden, they heard Ennoshita's voice.
"Open up! It's us! Us! Open up!"
Asahi raced back to the door and unlocked it, then heaved it open. Three people stumbled in, a girl with dark blue hair, a short blonde girl, and a nondescript boy with flat brown hair.
Kiyoko, Ennoshita, and Yachi.
The five rushed to close the door, then pulled together in a quick embrace before a can of food was shoved into each of their hands, three extra beds were set up, and Kiyoko and Ennoshita were relaying their story to Asahi by the light of the lantern that had been stored in the bunker near the food. Yamaguchi and Yachi had already fallen asleep. As it turns out, the door had been slammed off of its hinges by a well-placed, adrenaline fueled kick by Kiyoko, and with the supplies the five high schoolers had, they couldn't fix it. "So we'll have to relocate to the gym tomorrow, meaning we should get a good night's rest tonight." Kiyoko concluded as Asahi stared at her in amazement and slight fear. Kiyoko looked at him confusedly, then shook her head and laid down on her bedding. "Goodnight," she said to the other two, and soon Asahi and Ennoshita were left talking together.
"Well," Asahi said, "At any rate I'm glad you guys found us." "Yeah," Ennoshita nodded, "I didn't know what would've happened to us. We would probably have died if we didn't relocate." "Mmh," Asahi hummed in response.
Ennoshita, good at reading emotions and body language as always, immediately asked, "What's wrong?" "Nothing," the gentle giant replied, "I just hope no one has died. I'm...I'm scared."
"Me too," Ennoshita whispered, "Me too."
They sat together in the tranquil silence, reflecting on the past events. Eventually, Asahi leaned over to turn off the lantern. The light sputtered, then slowly died out as he flicked the off switch.
"You know," Kiyoko whispered into the silence, "I'm just as scared as you are."
