"What do you mean you told him?!"
Tanaka rubbed the back of his head in anxiousness. "Well, he had to know!" "Well no shit," Sugawara spat, "But give the poor boy some warning! That was supposed to cheer him up!"
"And what were you gonna do then? Cheer him up then break his heart? His best friend died! He needed to know!"
"Well yeah he needed to know, but not like this!"
"Well what were we supposed to do?"
"I don't know! I'm not an all powerful being! I'm just doing the best I can with what I have!"
"I know that!"
"Then cut me some slack!"
"I-"
"Okay, that's enough."
Daichi pushed Suga and Tanaka away from each other. "What's done is done. Fighting isn't going to get us anywhere. We just need to move on and wait for him to wake up." The two boys grumbled but begrudgingly obliged, and Daichi and Ennoshita shared a concerned look, then each turned to the boy of their respective year and consoled them.
Yachi was quietly whispering to Hinata and Yamaguchi as they watched the sun go down. There wasn't much to talk about, so eventually the conversation trickled off into silence and the trio just sat there, wishing that that sunset was seen under different circumstances. It really was a beautiful sunset, various reds and pinks blending with hues of blue and purple that coalesced around a vibrant orange sun.
It was too bad Asahi couldn't see it.
He was sitting with Nishinoya in the closet waiting for the small boy to rise from his slumber. God knows he would need consolation after what his friend had told him, and while he knew that Tanaka had done the right thing, he still found himself wishing that the small boy had never had to hear those words.
He eventually heard Noya shift, and soon after he awoke.
"Asahi-san?"
"Yes?"
"Is he really...?"
"...I'm so sorry."
His eyes flicked downwards and he began to tear up.
"Do you need a hug?"
Instead of answering, Nishinoya just leaned into the taller man, wrapping his left arm around him. Asahi rubbed circles on his back while Noya cried silently.
"It...maybe if I had been there...I could've...I might've been able to stop it..."
"It wasn't your fault," The tall brunette whispered. Nishinoya nodded but kept crying anyway.
A few minutes later the closet door rattled open. Suga and Tanaka both looked up simultaneously. Asahi glanced inside, then nodded, and walked inside, leaving the door open. A few moments later he walked out again, this time with a small figure clinging to him.
Noya.
He was puffy-eyed, shadows on his face, clearly still grieving, but it was Noya.
"Nishinoya-san!"
Hinata, being the ray of sunshine that he is, immediately jumped towards his senpai and gave him a huge hug, but the smaller boy flinched. Hinata backed away, confused, until he saw a makeshift cast on Nishinoya's arm and his eyes widened slightly in realization. He opened his mouth the apologize but Noya shook his head. "It's fine," he mumbled, "You didn't know." Hinata nodded and stepped back. "No, it's fine! Just...not too sudden." Hinata slowly walked up to him and gave him a hug, then Yachi, then Tanaka and Suga, and soon the whole team was crowded around him in a huge embrace.
Nishinoya began to cry.
Then Hinata started crying.
Then Suga.
Then Kiyoko.
And then, it seemed, the whole team exploded into tears. Feeling the loss of their teammate gnaw at the hole in their hearts, feeling the relief of being as together as they could be, and the overwhelming confusion at the situation they were in burst out as they all held each other as if life itself depended on it.
Oikawa parked the bus and left the keys inside the car. "Okay," he shouted to the boys in the back, "Everybody out! It's time for a snack run!"
"Oh shut up Shittykawa, we all know that our lives are in danger. You can quit being strong for our sakes now."
"Iwa-chan, let's go."
"Fine by me."
Oikawa, Iwaizumi, Kunimi, Kindaichi, and Kyoutani all shuffled off the bus. Everyone else had died the previous morning. "Stick together, you guys," Oikawa mumbled, and they tiptoed into the store, pacing through the aisles and grabbing what they could while shoving away zombies as quickly as possible.
A few minutes in, a scream pierced the back of the line.
Oikawa whipped his head around to see a gruesome bite mark on Kyoutani's right forearm. His eyes bulged and he began to foam at the mouth a little bit, then he fell to the ground.
He paled.
"Kyou..ta..ni?
The bleach-blonde boy suddenly lunged at Iwaizumi, who was in front of Kyoutani when he fell. Oikawa let out a terrified scream and pulled the living boy backwards into his arms, knocking the both of them over.
"Get up, get up!"
Everyone stumbled to their feet and ran for their lives. Kunimi was slowly but steadily falling behind, not used to expending this much energy all at once, so Oikawa slowed his pace to match his then flung him forwards, causing the setter to stumble. Iwaizumi seemed to notice this, and whirled around, yelling at his Kouhai to keep going. He grabbed Oikawa's arm and yanked him out of the way just as a pair of footsteps quietly thumped against the floor.
All of a sudden, there was a bang and a thwack, and the zombie furthest from him dropped.
