Kindaichi carried Yaku into the club room, and shut the door tight, holding it closed. He could hear the screams on the other side that signified how little time they'd had to spare. Sugawara was there, too, hugging Hinata and assuring him that everything would be okay. What Hinata couldn't see was the lack of emotion in his eyes when he said it. Yaku sniffed, was silent for a moment, then started bawling again.
"I'm sorry, Lev! I'm sorry I couldn't save you!"
"You couldn't do anything," Suga reasoned, trying to calm him down.
"It's my fault! People are dying and I know them, and I can't do anything! I can't just sit here, like a lamb waiting for slaughter! Do you know how much that hurt me-"
"YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY ONE!"
His voice was so broken, and so choked with tears, that it was almost unrecognizable when Hinata shouted.
"I'm here too, and if you haven't noticed, we're all in the same situation! It sucks, okay?! So stop acting like this huge tragedy has befallen only you, or spew some stupid shit about feeling bad, because I feel just as bad as you do! Do you understand, you selfish, assholish little prick?"
"Hinata, that's enough!"
"No, Suga-san, it isn't! Look at him! He thinks he's alone! He thinks he's the only one who lost someone they loved! I have news for you, buddy! On one of our food runs, I saw my mother! She was a zombie! Have you seen that?!"
Yaku kept crying, but was silent. Sugawara held Hinata back, as he was attempting to smack some sense into the libero, and Kindaichi watched.
"I'm going for a walk."
"Kindaichi-kun, no-"
And before any of them could stop him, he left.
Oikawa pulled Tsukishima into the back of a truck and Yamaguchi followed them. Kunimi raced in just behind them. Not knowing what to do and with zombies clawing at them, Yamaguchi smashed the glass at the back of the backseat, breaking into the car and letting everyone inside. As he climbed in, he bit his lip and ignored the pain that throbbed in his elbow and the tears that threatened to leak out. For now, it was worth it. Because for now, they were alive.
The zombies couldn't climb into the bed of the truck, so they couldn't reach the boy in the backseat, but Tsukishima and Kunimi still found some things in the glove compartment to defend themselves with, and Oikawa helped Yamaguchi pick the pieces of glass out of the seats of the truck and into the bed. After everyone was situated, Tsukishima took the sunshade and Yamaguchi helped him put it on the opening with the broken glass, to make sure they were as safe as possible. However he tried to hide it, for Yamaguchi, it hurt a lot. He'd lost his jacket in the rush to escape, so his elbow was fully visible.
"You're bleeding."
"I'm fine, Tsukki."
"Liar. Let me see it."
"No."
"Let me see it."
"No."
"Why not?"
"I don't need help for everything."
"You don't need it, but you might want it."
"Fine. Look, see? I'm fine and I don't need help because I'm fine."
"You don't look fine."
"Well, appearances can be deceiving."
"They can be."
"I'm fine."
"Fine. Only if you pass this test."
"Okay."
"Stick out the arm that's hurt and let me see the elbow you used to break the glass."
"Here."
Tsukishima poked it, and Yamaguchi flinched, tears welling up in his eyes. Wiping the blood on his finger on his shirt, he found the pocket he was looking for, and took out some volleyball tape. He looked for any glass on his friend's elbow and located a singular piece, which he managed to take out after some effort. At this point, however, Yamaguchi was crying from the sheer pain of it, so the blonde figured he should tape it up and be done, which was exactly what he did.
"Are you okay?"
Yamaguchi sniffed.
"It's a little better now that the glass is gone."
"Here."
Tsukishima handed his friend the jacket he had taken off and the boy took it gratefully. After putting it on, he continued to try to stifle his tears, wiping them away and looking at the ground as he cried. This didn't bode well with the blonde. He grabbed Tadashi's hand as he was using it to wipe at his eyes.
"Don't hide it. Man up and cry."
"Okay."
They hugged, and soon Oikawa and Kunimi joined them.
And eventually, the quartet fell asleep.
Kindaichi didn't come back. He'd gone out over three hours ago. Hinata, Yaku, and Suga were trying to keep hope, but there wasn't really any. They all knew what had probably happened. No one spoke of the incident before, but Hinata and Yaku kept glaring at each other hatefully. The grey-haired setter stood up and leaned against the wall.
"Guys."
They chose to ignore him.
"Guys."
"What."
"I know this is the last thing you want to hear. But-"
"We know he's dead, Suga-"
"Shut your fucking yap and let me finish!"
Sugawara clapped his hand over his mouth, but the words were already out of his mouth. Hinata and Yaku stared at his horrified expression as tears began to stream down his face. He fell down to his knees. Another person died, and he didn't stop it. Now, not only was he responsible for two deaths, he was splitting his only companions even further apart.
"Never mind. Do what you want."
There wasn't another word from him all evening. Hinata was the first to try to fix it.
"I'm sorry, Yaku-san. I should've just kept my mouth shut."
"It's fine. I needed a reality check."
"Hug it out?"
"Sure."
Suga didn't even notice their make-up. He was facing away from them, trapped in his own head.
It's your fault.
First it was Narita, now it's Kindaichi.
Look what you've done.
It's all your fault.
He couldn't speak, or move. His emotions leaked out of his eyes in the form of tears. The flow never stopped. All he could think of was the two boys. Remembering them. He wanted to bow into the earth and beg for their forgiveness.
But he couldn't.
It haunted him.
It would haunt him all his life.
