When Ethan first started working with them, it wasn't long before he had figured them out before the plan even started. He hadn't spoken up until they were just about done.
"You're weren't planning to bail on me, were you?"
"What?" Katsumi looked to Ethan quickly, a sort of panicked expression on his face for a moment. It disappeared as quickly as it appeared, returning to a calm and composed stare. "Of course not. Why?"
"You look like the type of guy who'd keep the money all to themselves," Ethan said nonchalantly. "And I'm the newbie here." In actuality, he had overheard their plans on leaving him if things went wrong.
He had joined the trio, thanks to Aiko, after Giran had found them and taken them to All For One, who they now call Sensei. Ever since the incident with heroes, he felt like he found people who understood him. However, even with Aiko here, he didn't like the way they were treating him.
The trio said nothing as they shuffled the bags as they walked. They were in some rich guy's home, about to leave through Miki's portal before someone found them. It seemed very likely this time if they didn't leave soon, especially with the amount of security around, and considering how close it was to Ethan getting caught.
"We weren't abandoning you, Ethan." Aiko said quietly, but even she was unsure of the plan. He could tell by the way she looked at Katsumi.
They were almost out of the place, and Miki seemed to pause for a moment at the door before continuing.
"I got away, though," Ethan continued. His voice changed from a tired, low drag to a cheerful, oblivious tone. "You can't get rid of me that easily!"
He smiled at them, knowing he caught them out. They pretended to not notice and continued with the told plan. Despite all that, Ethan still followed and stuck with them.
The next day, he came back and business returned as usual. Him helping with the layout of places, Katsumi cloning him to double the loot-carrying capacity, Miki helping with the escape, and Aiko on lookout duty and backup. Maybe they didn't need him anyway, after all, they were just after money and food. Miki could transport them through his portal easily.
He thought about leaving, but he didn't want to be alone again. They would need him for exploration, he told himself. Exploration, finding new hideouts and places without getting caught.
He still felt excluded, as if they didn't want him. But he was still useful, so he stuck around. Even years later until now, he somehow never connected with them. It never just "clicked".
Maybe it was his personality, maybe it was his abilities, heck, maybe it was his appearance. His chameleon features were the start of all this, anyway. Weird scales and freakish eyes. It's what people found unnatural about him, even in the world of quirks.
He didn't blame them.

Shota felt something grab his arm before he completely went through to the other portal. When he looked up, he didn't see anything, just his arm hanging above him. It was weird, feeling something on his arm and not seeing it.
A moment later, however, an outline of a figure appeared and he could see that it was the chameleon man, grabbing his arm and panting for breath.
Ethan pulled him up quickly, the portal closing afterwards.
"Look who's here." Katsumi sneered. He must have been pushed down by Ethan, as he was slowly getting up from the ground. "Imagine predicting someone else's betrayal to you, and then betraying them first."
