Summer, 2008
Georgette Hayley Granger.
That is my full name. Everyone calls me Hayley or Hails, never Georgette. I don't really like the name too much. Ever since I learned to speak I've told people to call me Hayley, which of course they did.
During the summer of 2008, I met a boy who decided he wanted to call me something different.
The summer started two weeks ago. All of my friends have officially left and gone off overseas to spend their vacation with their families and such, leaving me here alone for the summer.
I have a small group of friends, due to the fact that not many people seem to be fond of me. I think it's because my parents, Lisa and Peter Granger, own the Sandy Lane Hotel, one of the most grand hotels in the entire Caribbean. There's always rumours about me and how I'm some rich stuck up bitch who gets everything she wants because 'daddy can afford it'.
Lucky for me, at least four people allowed me to get close to them, and they love me just as much as I love them.
Maria, Katherine, Michael and James. My four best friends. We do everything together, all have the same interests and are basically inseparable. We're the skaters, the "outcasts", the people that onlookers stare at and think to themselves about how much they wish they could be like us.
That last one may not be true but we've made it a habit to romanticise our lives at all times.
This summer is the first summer where at least two of the five of us won't be together. Maria is off to New Zealand, Mike is visiting Canada, Kath is travelling around Europe, and James got a job at his dad's workshop so he might as well be considered to be off island.
Island. Barbados. My home.
Living on an island is cool, to an extent. It has it's benefits and considering I live right on the beach, it is pretty cool. However, I would love to move away someday. I plan to move to London when I'm 16 in order to live with my aunt Heather, my favourite person on this Earth, so I can complete my A-levels in England rather than here.
That's all in the future though, let's focus on the now.
Tonight, there's this important dinner my parents have to attend, meaning I have to make myself all nice and pretty so they can show me off at a moment's notice. It's what they always do. They always use me in that way to show the people they have all these meetings with what a "loving family" they have.
Earlier today, I went to walk my dog, Sandy, along the shore as I do everyday. On arriving back on the hotel grounds, I noticed things being delivered. Big boxes which looked like they were filled with equipment, camera equipment. It didn't really phase me then because we get things like that a lot here. Whenever celebrities visit, they always come along with some odd things delivered.
