"dreadful etiquette I apologise" JD said after he opened the window.
"it's okay...you better come in before you slip" I say, unable to hide a smile. I get out of my desk chair and push my window up higher so that he can safely climb through, I leave it open.
"next time I promise to call ahead" he says, looking at the book now in the corner, its pages crumpled beneath it.
"oh that, wasn't because of you. I got stuck on a problem and kind of lost it" I explain. He makes an 'ah' face.
"Well, I saw the croquet set up in the back, up for a match?" he asks. I smile and nod. "great, I'll take the window" he says. I nod. he climbs back through the window and I close it before quickly going down the stairs. I check my parents room to find them both passed out and then meet JD on the back lawn.
"any particular colour you prefer?" he asks.
"no. you?" I ask. he shakes his head. He looks around for a moment, picking up the yellow Mallet and the green ball. I chuckle and pick up the blue mallet and red ball.
We played for a while. I finally managed to hit his ball with mine.
"hitting me out?" he asked. Is came over to him. he stood right next to his ball. I looked down and hit my ball through the metal hoop. When I looked up, I realised I had stepped a lot closer than I thought, or maybe he stepped closer while I wasn't looking. It didn't matter, he was there, and so close. I couldn't help but stare into his eyes. He lent in. I pulled back slightly. He did too. I quickly lent in instead and kissed him. it was only quick. I guess I was trying to let him know I wasn't saying no. I was just hesitant. After a moment, he kissed me again. This one was longer and followed by another and another.
After a while, I felt it going further than I felt was okay at that moment. I carefully separated myself. We both breathed deeply.
"I'm sorry, I'm just not ready for that" I say quietly.
"it's...okay. I get it" he says. he kisses my cheek and smiles. "it's pretty late, I better get home... want me to pick you up in the morning?" he asked. I smiled.
"I'd like that" I say. we kiss one last time before he leaves. For a moment, I had forgotten my worry over Heather. However, it wasn't long before it came back.
