"that was the one with the tree huggers, right?" JD asked. I know it's strange, but the wording didn't sound right when he said it. his father chuckled.
"showed those fucks" he said.
"30 fireworks attached to the trunk. Arraigned but acquitted" JD said. we had been holding hands before Mr Drake came in. I gave a gentle squeeze.
"Gosh pop, I almost forgot to introduce my girlfriend" Mr Drake said.
"oh, Jane this is my dad, dad Jane" JD said.
"hello" I said. I had the feeling offering to shake hands wouldn't happen, so I gave a small wave. He waved back.
"so, why don't you ask your little friend to stay for lunch?" JD asked. Mr Drake looked at me, asking the question again with his eyes. Before I could reply the phone rang. JD stood up, releasing my hand and picked it up. "hello" he said into the receiver. He held it out to me.
"it's for you" he said to me. I stood and took the phone.
"hello" I said into the receiver.
"Jane! Thank god, I kept trying your house, but you weren't picking up. I thought you might be with JD" Veronicas voice came over.
"yeah" I replied.
"look, I'm really sorry we didn't tell you, we thought it would be better if we didn't say anything, and especially with what you told me in the bathroom at r-"
"it's okay, I get it" I cut her off. I started to feel somewhat uncomfortable talking to Veronica about this over JD's phone in front of his dad. "let's talk about it later, did you get home alright?" I asked.
