Chapter Twenty: Strange Frequencies

Scott and I met Stiles and Theo at the Animal Clinic, they had found another body. "Do you know him?" Theo asked as Stiles uncovered the boy's face.

I nodded, "His name was Josh, he was a junior"

"Which one did it? The one with the cane?" Scott glanced between them

Theo agreed as Stiles turned to look at him, "Yeah"

"What are we going to do with him? We can't just set the alarm and leave, that's how Tracy disappeared," Stiles sighed, "Alright, someone's got to stay here with him"

"I'll do it," Theo said quietly, "It's not like I had a big Saturday night planned"

Scott glanced at his phone and Stiles frowned, "What is it?"

He paused as he reread the text, "Another one. Another chimera"

Scott knocked on the bathroom door as we stood outside with Stiles and Liam. "Hayden? It's Scott. I know that you're scared, but we just... we want to help," Scott called to the girl before turning to Liam, "I can hear her heart beating, she's really freaked out. What happened?"

The boy shrugged, "She was okay when we got here. I went to text you for two seconds and she locked herself in"

"Why?" Stiles asked.

"I don't know"

Scott took a step forwards, "She's definitely a chimera?"

Liam nodded, "She said she heard a voice saying 'Your condition improves' "

"Okay, that's unsettling," I went up to the door and gently knocked on it, "Hayden, Sweetie, my name is Ari. I'm a friend of Liam's. Look, I know that you're scared, I understand. But we promise that we can help, we'll do everything we can to keep you safe, I promise"

There was silence and Stiles placed a hand on my shoulder, "Let me try, okay?" he knocked on the door, "Hayden? This is Stiles, your sister works for my dad at the Station. Look, just open the door, okay? You can trust us"

Scott stepped forwards again as Stiles moved back, "We just need to tell you the truth, Hayden. And that think kind of usually is better face-to-face. Listen, either you're gonnna unlock the door or I'm gonna have to break it open. It's okay if you don't want to talk, or if you're not ready to believe us. But I just... I gotta know that you're okay in there"

There was no response and he prepared to kick the door down. The door suddenly clicked and opened a little. I slowly pushed it further open and we stared at the girl. Hayden's eyes glowed bright yellow and her fingers had claws protruding from them, "I believe you"

I stared at the motionless body in front of me, watching as the scary man wiped his bloody hands with a handkerchief before walking away. "Mommy!" I heard myself cry, running towards the body. I began to shake it with my tiny hands, "Mommy, wake up! Mommy?" she just lay there, staring blankly into the distance.

Two large arms wrapped around me, gently pulling me into a hug. I looked up at him in curiosity, examining his features. He had scruffy, chocolate coloured hair and dark green eyes that had once been filled with joy and mischief. Instead, his young eyes were filled with tears as he stared at Mommy in horror. "Why isn't Mommy waking up?" I asked him as he stroked my cheek, keeping me from looking at her.
