Chapter Twenty-One: Ouroboros

I ran through the woods, jumping over rocks and fallen branches as I continued to search for Liam and Hayden. A howl echoed through the night, ricocheting off of my surroundings. As I headed to the Lookout Point, I bumped into Malia. "Find anything?" she asked.

"Nothing"

We continued, finding Scott crouched on the ground, panting heavily. "There's no scent, no tracks. No way to find them"

I sighed, "But Liam can howl back, right?"

"Only if he heard me"

Theo and Stiles ran into the Liam's house, the latter pulling me into a tight hug. I frowned, "Why do you smell like blood?"

"Theo got punched in the face by the thing that took the body," he shrugged. "It's not my blood, don't worry," he tried to assure me.

Theo spoke up, "Where's Scott?"

I sighed, "At the Sheriff's Station, Kira's dad got arrested for murder"

"But Kira probably did it" Malia cut in. I glared at her, warning her to be quiet. Whatever was going on, it wasn't Kira's fault, she wouldn't murder someone.

The door flew open and Scott stormed into the room, "Hey, is Kira okay?" Stiles asked.

We glanced at each other as he ignored us, heading upstairs. "Scott?" Theo frowned.

We raced after him as he headed up to the bedroom where Lydia and Mason were stood, explaining everything to Corey. Scott was stood over the chimera, his claws digging into Corey's neck. "Don't get too close" Lydia warned them.

"What is he doing?" Theo asked.

"Tapping into Corey's memories," I explained, "It's usually something only Alphas do"

The boy stepped forwards, watching them carefully, "Is it as dangerous as it looks?"

Stiles shrugged, "Probably more"

"Does anyone know if it's working?" Mason frowned, glancing worriedly at Corey.

Scott suddenly pulled away from him and we rushed to catch the two boys. "Is he okay?" Scott asked.

Corey gasped, "What the hell did you do to me?"

"You'll be alright" I tried to comfort him.

He brought a hand to the back of his neck, "There's blood!"

"You'll heal" Scott sighed.

"Scott-"

"He'll be fine!" the Alpha snapped, "Listen... I think it worked, I saw something. There were tunnels, pipes along the walls. There were these two huge blue pipes at the entrance, two on both side" he began to draw the place on a notepad, still breathless.

Stiles looked at it with a frown, "Wait a second. I know this, I've seen this before. That's one of the tunnels I used to skateboard in. Remember my dad caught me one time and told me to never go back?"

Lydia nodded, "It's the water treatment plant"

"That's where they are. That's where we'll find Liam and Hayden" Scott gasped.

"Scott... Scott, slow down. Just think for a second, okay? Mason shouldn't be going" Stiles called as we followed the Alpha downstairs.

"Liam's my best friend, I'm going"

Stiles scoffed, "Oh, did you suddenly get super wolf powers? I wasn't aware of that development"

Scott shrugged, "Well, if you're not going, I could use the help"

"No, I'm coming just as soon as I talk to my dad. They're moving the body and he wants me to make sure that this time no one steals it"

"How's he gonna do that?" I asked.

He huffed, "I don't know, but whoever took the last one was strong enough to flip my jeep"

Malia glanced around at us, "We can bring Theo"

The boy looked at Scott, "Maybe I better stay here. You know, in case the Doctors decide to make a house call for Corey"

"Scott, Stiles is right. We need to slow down and think" Lydia sighed.

"I am thinking... about how Liam and Hayden could already be dead"

She rolled her eyes, "You could've hurt him, Scott. Really hurt him"

Scott's shoulders sagged as he looked at Corey, "I have to find Liam"

Stiles stepped forwards, hugging me, "Text me for anything"

"I got it"

"Anything at all, okay?"

"Yeah, love you"

We ran through the water treatment plant, Malia glanced at Mason and I worriedly as we followed Scott into the tunnels. "Liam!" I called.

"Can you catch a scent?" Mason asked Scott.

"There's too many chemicals"

The human sighed, "Then this might take a while"

I raced down one of the tunnels, trying to listen for any kind of suspicious sound. "Hayden!" I heard Scott yell from a distance.

"Liam!" Malia called.

"Liam!" Mason yelled in panic.

I frowned, hearing footsteps, "Hayden?" I shouted. As I rounded the corner, I bumped into Scott, "Anything?"

He shook his head, "Nothing"

"Hayden!" Mason cried, stopping when he saw us in front of him.

"Okay, we need to make sure that we're not covering the same area" Scott panted, beginning to wheeze.

I frowned, "You need your inhaler, don't you?"

He paused, "Quiet, I think I hear something"

"That's just the lights, isn't it?" Malia asked as we listened to a faint buzzing sound.

He sighed, "Come on, this way"

We caught up to Mason and he huffed as he turned to face us, "I'm telling you guys, we've been down this one before"

"What the hell are we doing?" Scott panicked, "We're running up and down this place, up and down tunnels. And there's no way... there's no way that we're gonna find them" 

He was breathing heavily, causing Malia to frown, "Scott, you need your inhaler"

"No"

"Scott, use it. Use your inhaler" I urged him.

He fell to the floor, wheezing and panting. After a moment, he took the inhaler out of his pocket, shaking it and pressing the button. He gasped as he breathed in the drug. There was a moment of silence before he spoke, "This is all my fault, we're never going to find them. It's my fault"

Mason shook his head and held his hand out, "Scott," he said. The Alpha paused before taking his hand and letting himself get pulled up. "We should keep looking, we should keep trying" he tried to encourage Scott, who nodded and lead us back through the tunnels.

Scott sighed as he opened the door to Liam's house. I grinned and sighed in relief when I saw Liam and Hayden asleep on the couch. Lydia smiled, gently throwing a blanket over them as they slept. I pulled Theo into a hug, "Thank you so much" I whispered. I pulled away and stood next to Lydia, watching the two peaceful teenagers.

Scott had left to see Kira, her parents were sending her away to get help. Apparently, the Dread Doctors did something to her on the night of Senior Scribe, they made her dangerous. Stiles had revealed that Parrish was the one taking the bodies, he didn't even know yet. It made me wonder how much of an influence they had over us. Nobody wanted to say it, but they were slowly tearing us apart. We had no idea how long it would be until we lost everything. It seemed like there was a clock hanging over us, slowly ticking away as we ran out of time. Something bad was coming.
