Christmas had gone by in a blur. I don't remember much about it except that Rosie got the most gifts, Xavier's favorite gift wasn't even from us (it was from Abigail), and my parents had a very...special gift for each other. I wish I could forget that.
Anyways, New Year's Eve is finally here and I'm nervously looking forward to the night ahead. For starters, mama y papa are actually letting me go to Brett's party which is a first. Xavier and Rosie all but pouted when they found out that I was not going to be there for New Year's Eve. They were even more upset when they were told they had to stay with my parents.
Applying the last of my makeup and adjusting my skirt, I go to say goodbye to my family. My parents are cuddling on the coach with wine nearby and Rosie is on the other side of the room watching Netflix. I notice that Xavier isn't in the living room so I back track to his room before saying my goodbyes.
"Xavier," I call his name while knocking on his door.
"Uh, what do you want?" He asks from the other side.
"I'm leaving now so I just came to say goodbye."
There's silence for a second before I hear his voice again. "Well, goodbye."
"I'm coming in." I tell him, opening the door.
"No, wait -" He begins to protest, but it's too late.
"What do you think you're doing?" I ask when my eyes land on his opened window and his body straddling the window sill.
"I - uh. Don't tell mom?"
I raise an eyebrow at him. "Xavier, come back inside and close the window. It's getting cold in here."
He grumbles, but complies.
"So," I start, sitting on his bed and gesturing for him to sit next to me. "Where were you trying to sneak off to?"
He doesn't look at me at first because he wants me to go away, just like that. But, I'm not going to let that happen.
"Abby invited me over." Xavier tells me.
"And...you have Wednesday to hang out with her."
"You don't get it Amara. This has never happened to you. You were never invited anywhere by your crush - especially not on New Year's Eve."
I open my mouth to reply but quickly shut it. I need to properly process his words and attempt to put myself in the shoes of my sophomore brother. He's not wrong. At that age I was not getting invited to places other than at sleepovers. He's also not exactly one of the popular guys who has a good amount of girl friends as he does guy friends. I know he's looking for that midnight kiss.
"Xavier listen, I know it's not ideal and it's the last thing you want right now - hey, look at me," I stare at him until he does. "Going out to see Abby right now seems like the most ideal thing ever, especially since I got out of New Year's Eve with you guys this year, but I promise you'll get another chance. Maybe it won't be on New Year's Eve, but you have other holidays and other days to kiss her. You realize this is like the first party I'm going to and I'm a senior in high school, right? You'll get your time kid, I promise."
He lets out an annoyed sigh. "I guess."
I smile. "Good. Now come on and join the rest of your family, okay?"
