(joes pov)

a smile spread across my face. Demi's letter just made me smile. I actually liked the name Tristan. & I wanted her to know. I was so excited to be having a son.

we were at a different camp now. a more efficient one. the war is slowing down here, & moving more towards Syria. mostly all we do here, is visit/rescue children & adults here.

it feels more like a missions trip than war. we play football with the kids, and teach them American games. there's this one little girl, Mila. She doesn't speak. but she likes to read. I bring her books every now & then. all the kids speak English. which is convenient.

we're supposed to be trained in protecting this kids in case of a bomb, or attack. they're the #1 priority.

I picked up a pen & a piece of paper and wrote at the top, 'letter 98' and addressed it to demi and Tristan.

'dear demi and Tristan,

I love the name Tristan Adam Jonas. Thanks for sending extra ultrasound copies. I enjoy looking at them & showing them to the kids.

im so excited to be coming home. 4 more weeks. hopefully I make it before the little man arrives. I might not forgive myself if im not. but hopefully you'll have your mom or sisters or Selena with you. no matter what you won't be alone.

I like this part of the army a lot better. we work with children to protect them from the War. they're all great kids. it's actually pretty relaxing here. not very much action.

however, I'd rather be with you guys. you're my life. and the reason I get up everyday and push through. just remember 28 more sleeps until I see you.

hang in there babies.

love,
joe'

I sealed the envelope and put it in the mailbox. our mail comes faster now than it did then. being in combat makes it hard to keep in touch with anyone.

"who you writing to?" I turned and looked. it was a voice id never heard before. mila's.

"you talk." i said playfully astonished. her face stayed straight as she found no humor in what I had just said. "right. well uh, my wife demi" i told her.

"you're married?" she questioned. I nodded. "expecting our first baby too." i told her. she looked confused. "so why are u not with her?" she questioned.

"well, im here taking care of you guys. I signed up for 6 years in the army. I have 3 left." i explained. "can't you quit to be with your family?" she questioned.

I shook my head. "no. in America, u can't break a promise to your country like that. it's okay tho, just a few years left and I'll be done." i said.

"hm.. land of the free and home of the brave isn't so free is it?" she asked rhetorically and walked away.

it may be hard for her to understand but im proud of my decision. my country needs me & im glad to help.
