"Private Jonas! mails here!" I heard my drill Sargent yell. he handed me an envelope and I saluted him. this is the highlight of my day. getting a letter from Demi. she never misses a day, and neither do I. we're on day 42 here. & I miss her so much. we're only halfway to go.

I opened the letter and got on my bunk to read it. 'dear joe,' I pictured the words coming out of Demi's mouth. I could almost hear her voice. 'as usual I miss you like crazy. it's letter 42. which means in just 1 month I get to see your handsome face again.'

that made me smile. I continued, 'I think I'm going insane without u. I begin to see your face on strangers. and I hear your voice at the most random times. it's almost like you're hear. but only for a while. I cannot wait to have 2 whole weeks with u soon. stay safe. lots of love, Demi."

I smiled and put that letter in a jar, along with all 41 others she's written. they smell just like her. she has a vanilla fragrance. & it was all over the paper. I could basically feel her presence. and I longed for nothing then to hug her.

I picked up a pen and some paper and started to write her back. "what's ol lover boy up to?" one of my buddy's, Corey asked. I looked up. "writing a letter to my girlfriend." I said. he took a seat by me. and started writing his own letter. "who you writing to?" I asked. "wife." he said.

it was quiet. "my son was just born. his names Dylan Lee Jones. 7 pounds 5 ounces. and I wasn't there." he said with a tear down his cheek. "I'm sorry man." I said patting his back. "I'm sorry to be bugging you and shit. but all the other guys," he pointed to the rest of the group over by the pool table, "would call me a pussy for crying." he said.

I shook my head. "I would never do that dude. you're too cool for all that. I'm sorry you weren't there. but just think, 1 more month and we can go home." I reminded him. "yeah. I'm excited for all that." he said.
