(Joe's pov)

day 45. I rolled out of bed and hurried to put my boots on. "Jonas! mail call!" my drill sargeant yelled. I hurried to the room in which he was standing and he handed me a letter. I smiled and went to the table ripping the envelope open.

dear Joe,  day 45 is here and im getting impatient. I really miss you. & I can't wait to see u soon. my world is so boring without you. this letter may be cut short, I was running a bit late for work today. I've been behind on everything. anyways, I love you with all my heart. xoxo, Demi.

I smiled. she was so perfect. I put the letter in my jars of letters then went to join my fellow soldiers. we all goofed off for a while. it was a little boring being deployed.

then suddenly something happened so fast, and so quick we couldn't see it coming. there was a loud boom. and suddenly everything was foggy from the smoke. "everyone grab your weapons and go!" sergeant yelled.

we all rushed around to get ready. I saw someone lying on the floor. Corey! I thought to myself. "Jonas." he mumbled. I rushed to him and tried to help him up. "come on. let's go." I said. "no.." he struggled. "leave me." he was fading out quickly. "my wife is... Alyssa Jones. Grand Rapids, Michigan. find her. tell her--I love h-" he fell into an eternal sleep but I knew what he meant....

I was interrupted by sergeant yelling. "Jonas! lets go!  we don't have time for these moments, we're in the middle of a war!" I got up and grabbed my gun, making sure my bulletproof vest and all my other protective armor was on.

I thought of Demi's smile, and that eased me through my fear. day 45. was not a good day.
