"Happy Birthday to youuuuu!" My dad sings out of tune to me as I sit in my chair, looking at my cake with a giddy smile. I'm finally 8!

I breathe in and blow out the candles sitting on top of my blue cake. My family claps and I giggle. My dad then pulls out a thinly wrapped square.

"For you," he says fondly, handing it to me. I rip open the wrapping paper, and study the object for a moment.

"This is a record, Dad," I conclude. Then, my face brightens at the title.

"Of Big Band Favorites of the 40's!" I gasp and leap up to hug my parents. "Thank you!"

"Why don't you go listen to it? Dad and I can handle cleaning up this mess," my mom spreads out her arms, gesturing to my after party mess. I smile and pound downstairs into the basement where my dad keeps his record player. I pop in the huge, shiny black disc as I imagine all of the cool tracks I can listen to.

I have always been a bit obsessed with the World War II era. It scares me slightly that one man had the nerve to stand up to, basically, the entire world, and almost gotten away with it. I sometimes wish I can one day serve my country just like all the men and women did back then. L

I place the needle on one of the lines and sit back, ready to hear whatever comes on first. It crackles slightly, then a marching tune comes on.
"Who's strong and brave here to save the American way?
Who vows to fight like a man for what's right night and day?
Who will compain door-to-door for America?
Carry the flag shore-to-shore for American?
From Hoboken to Spokain!
The Star Spangled Man with a Plan!

Who can't ignore there's a threat and a war we must win?
Who'll hang a noose from the goose stepping goons from Berlin?
Who will redeem, heed the call for America?
Who'll rise or fall, give his all for America?
Who's here to prove that we can?
The Star Spangled Man with a Plan!

I keep listening intently. This song stirs me in some way even I can not recognize. It keeps going on, crackling slightly.

"Who woke the giant that napped in America?
We know it's no one but Captain America!
Who'll finish what they began?
Who'll kick the Kruats to Japan?
The Star Spangled Man with a Plan!

The record stops, leaving me sitting in silence, contemplating what I just heard. This, Captain America, so they say, sounds amazing. Brave, intelligent, strong, and witty. I slowly stand up in a trance and walk up the stairs, thinking about how much this Captain America now inspires me. I make a pact to myself here and now to try and be like him.

Strong.

Steady.

Brave.

Proud.

Maybe, just maybe, I have found a role model for myself. Something I have never even came close to thinking about in my life.

The reason I am so isolated from the world is that my mom and dad used to work secretly, but now they both work in the mall. We don't have enough money to send me off to school, but I don't need it. I am extremly smart, listening to my dad almost daily when he gives me lectures on math and different subjects kids learn about in school. I like being smart, especially for my age. I want to become even smarter, eating up any information I could find.

I keep the words of the song going through my head for the next few weeks. Little do I know that I would soon have to be strong and brave where most normal people would just snap in half.
