Through the week the boy who everyone now knows goes by Max was found talking to many different crowds; band, theater, cheerleaders, jocks, goths. No matter the group, he always seemed to fit right in, like he had always been there. As I sit next to Jason at the lunch table on a Friday I see him sitting with those who were known to be potheads. And again I can see him out behind the football field smoking a joint with Jermey Wright.
"So this guy does drugs huh? Why do people like him." Asks Jason not doing a good job hiding his jealousy.
"He really is a nice guy, have you tried talking to him at all?" I ask, not fully understanding why I was defending him. He was in a few of my classes, but I only sat next to him in one, my next class, Chemistry. True we talked a lot in that class, it was so natural to do, but I was no one special.
"Only once, when he interrupted Jess and I after she told me she broke up with Trevor. Though she did not seem to mind that much." Jason said, trying to hide the pain behind his inability to take it to the next stage.
Jess and I have still not talked, I had no idea that she had cut the cord with Trevor, though I was not surprised. Along with Max I also had Chemistry with Jess and had seen them talking multiple times and heavy flirting during a lab.
"Don't let it bug you Jason, you know that is just how Jess is." trying to lighten the mood. "How is she doing anyway?" I ask
"Brittany if you really want to know you can ask her. As I said earlier this week, I don't know what happened between the two after I left, but I am not having it anymore. You guys need to fix this, the longer you wait the harder it will be." He said a little sternly, it's obvious our little fued was getting to him. I sat there eating the rest of my lunch in relative silence as I thought over what he had said and knew he was right and I started to rehearse my words.
I made my way to Chemistry class which was in the freshman wing of the school, hopefully getting to class early enough to take some time to talk to Jess. Sitting and waiting however did not calm my nerves.
"Hey there tour guide." The blonde hair boy said as he sat down with a smile. He had continued to call me his tour guide long after I had shown the whole school to him and other girls offered to replace me.
"Hey Max, are you enjoying life at North High?" I asked
"Ya, so far the people here are pretty chill for a small town." he said with a smile
"It's small, so people are kinda forced to get along with everyone." I said
"It sure is small, what exactly do you do around here?" he asked
I laughed at this as I knew it was true what benefits came from being a small town were outweighed by the boredom one would experience. "We have a movie theater, and a few restaurants, but really there is nothing to do in this town until summer and the beach opens up and fires light up. If you are willing to make the drive there is a mall in River Run, that is south on 24."
"Beach day? That could be fun," he said with a smile. I can't help but think what it would be like running on the beach with him, splashing around in the water, his skin and muscles left bare for the sun to hit. Hopefully my laugh hides the heat I could start to feel in my cheeks and belly.
"So in the meantime, I am having a party tonight at my house, would you like to go?" He asked
I was not a party person, not like what I feel I always see on TV at least. Most of my parties involve Jess and Jason and forcing Jess to watch a scary movie, and to make up for that by making Jason watch a rom com.
"Brittany doesn't really do big kid parties. It's not her scene, isn't that right Brittany." I had not even noticed the fire hair girl come into the door let alone her sitting in her seat. I turned to see a smirk on her face, as she saw the gape in mine. She has started to make it a habit to call me Brittany, which I never thought I would hear her say, or realize how I would dislike and I think she knows that it hurts. But why was she trying to stop me from getting to know Max. She cannot really be going for him now that she was single, why does she have to date every single guy in this school.
