One of the great American founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin once said, that "in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes". And while he might have been right about that, it would seem that good ol' Ben Franklin forgot one particular inevitability that plagued the life of every young gay to be born on God's green Earth. The fact that without fail, every gay at some point or another will unavoidably end up having a heart-wrenchingly disappointing infatuation with a straight person.
Finn Callaghan was no exception to this truth, of which he was all too aware. And since he was thirteen, a young gay only just realizing that strange feeling he'd get in his pants while in the gym locker room or walking through the underwear aisle at the department store; Finn had had a burning, secret, unrequited pining for none-other that Wyatt Montgomery.
Wyatt Montgomery was everything Finn ever dreamt of in a potential lover-boyfriend-husband-or what have you; he was tall, muscular, charming, smart, witty, not to mention drop dead fucking gorgeous. Those blue eyes, that light tan from hours of football practice in the sun, the muscles that rippled whenever he'd make the slightest move, the deep voice and charming southern drawl; but unfortunately for Finn, Wyatt's golden blond hair wasn't the only thing straight about him.
When he was a kid Wyatt was a typical mischievous, loud, boisterous boy, and this only elevated when he became a teenager. Finn, on the other hand, was always well behaved, sweet, and kind. Wyatt and Finn were polar opposites in every sense of the word; in terms of temperament, likes, dislikes, sexuality, an especially their views and opinions.
Wyatt was conservative just like his religious Evangelical Christian family; while Finn's family were Irish Catholic Democrats. Wyatt's family were southern and proud of it, tracing their family all the way back to Pre-Civil War Savannah, Georgia; the Callaghans on the other hand traced their family back to County Wicklow, Ireland, having settled in the USA relatively recently. Finn liked pop music while Wyatt religiously listened to country; Wyatt drove a pickup truck and loved fishing while Finn would rather be run over by a truck than be anywhere near a live fish.
But despite these differences Finn couldn't help but feel this inexplicable draw that pulled him into the charismatic and sexy Wyatt Montgomery. When they were younger he always saw Wyatt as an older brother figure; granted that Finn's older brother Aidan was the same age as Wyatt, while Wyatt's younger brother Sawyer was Finn's age. But Finn will never forget the day that all changed, he was thirteen and Wyatt was sixteen; it was their annual fourth of July hangout where to two families. Something about that same charming douchebag half-smile, those twinkling blue eyes, those rippling muscles paired with light wash blue jeans; it all seemed to send Finn into a tailspin.
Unfortunately for Finn, his feelings and inexplicable attraction to Wyatt Montgmomery wasn't the only thing that changed during that particular trip. Only a few weeks prior, knowing full well that he'd only had feelings for boys and fully coming to terms with it himself; Finn came out to his family. They were accepting, though weary; knowing full well that children at school would give him a hard time, and that he'd face homophobia anywhere he went in Georgia and the rest of the deeply religious Southern United States. But while his family were accepting, the Montgomerys were a different story; their faith served as the backbone of their identity, and homosexuality would not be tolerated. Thus the Callaghans all agreed to keep it hush-hush form the Montgomerys for the time being.
Finn originally only intended to tell Sawyer, but Wyatt overheard him coming out to him. While Sawyer was uncomfortable at first, he came to terms with it only hours later; but Wyatt on the other hand wasn't okay with it. He confronted Finn, and received a tearful forced coming-out that Finn neither wanted nor enjoyed. Before that moment, Wyatt would carry Finn on his back, tease him lovingly, treat him like a younger sibling; but it all changed after he heard that Finn was gay.
