Wyatt felt a sense of relief wash over his body as Wyatt pulled into the large driveway of the Montgomery family 'farm' in the country area outside of Savannah. The Montgomery's had owned the 'farm' for hundreds of years, since the seventeen hundreds. The home was beautiful, built in that old 'plantation style' that could have been found throughout Savannah. A two story house with wraparound porches on both levels that were lined with quaint white rocking chairs.
Ever since Wyatt's Grandpa Sam retired from his long career as a US senator, Grandma Mary Beth and Grandpa Sam, whom Wyatt called Mawmaw and Pawpaw like many a good southern boy, had been living out their old age on the Montgomery farm and tending to the old family house that had been in the family for generations.
Life seemed to stand still in the country; the air, the breeze, the sound of summer cicadas in the trees, and the heat. And though Finn always fancied himself out to be a city boy, he secretly did find something almost endearing about coming to the Montgomery's farm during the major holidays.
"We're here..." Wyatt raised his brows, stating the obvious as he glanced over to see Finn was thankfully still asleep.
Four hours. Four hours of excruciating awkwardness was the price Wyatt had to pay for bringing up the other night. Lucky for Wyatt, Finn fell asleep to the hum of his truck engine as they rolled along the highway, but nonetheless it pained him to think that Finn reacted the way he did. All his life he knew he was gay; and he also knew that it'd be his absolute undoing.
Living in the South and coming form a prolific Southern Baptist, conservative political dynasty meant that if he wanted to follow in his grandfather's footsteps and enter the political sphere it would be more than easy for him; but if he wanted to do so and be true to whom he was, it wouldn't be smooth sailing. Being gay was a 'sin' and an 'abomination' to the vast majority of Evangelical Christians who made up the vast majority of the electorate of his House district in Georgia, being openly gay and running for office would be a surefire way to lose an election.
Instead he chose to live this lie, with only one single person knowing his secret; and now including Finn there were two. Finn held the key to his demise in his hands, yet Wyatt wasn't even concerned about that; all he could feel was that unbearable clenching in his chest as he held his naked childhood love in his arms while he sobbed heart wrenchingly into his bare chest. The deep rejection he felt knowing that what was perhaps the most magical night of his life, that he had wearily yearned for since he was a teenager, was so painfully unbearable to the one he shared it with.
"There y'all are! I was beginning to wonder wear y'all were!" Wyatt forced a smile as he watched his grandfather and the rest of Wyatt's and Finn's families approach his truck from the big house.
Wyatt climbed out of his car, glaring over towards the group, including his parents, Finn's parents, both their grandparents, and their brothers. He brought is finger up to his lips to keep them quiet, gesturing towards the sleeping boy in his front passenger seat, his dark hair messily strewn over his pretty face.
"Hi Pawpaw." Wyatt smiled warmly at the older man as he walked over and exchanged a tight hug; Grandpa Sam reaching up to ruffle Wyatt's messy hair as if he was still the child that his grandfather saw him as.
"How was the drive over?" Asked Grandpa Sam, a glint of excitement in his eyes seeing his oldest grandson back home once again.
Family was always the first and forefront thing with the Montgomery's, Grandpa Sam had only one son, Wyatt and Sawyer's dad, Chris. Their family wasn't big but they were close knit nonetheless. While the Callaghan's had a big Catholic family both in the States and back in Ireland, it meant the world to the Callaghans's that every secular holiday with them right here on the Montgomery family house.
