Finn smiled as he approached that all too familiar plaque on the wall of the Capitol Building, reading "Representative Wyatt Montgomery - Georgia". He'd felt so many different emotions in the past; but today for the first time he didn't feel dread or nerves; he felt happy. He was looking forward to spending more time with Wyatt, even though he literally lived with him.
But little did Finn realize that outside of the safe little bubble of love and confinement that was Wyatt's house; everything was different. Their lives were split between freedom and the shakels of society; between love and the fear of being subjected to hate. Little did poor Finn Callaghan realize that he was about to have a rude awakening that Wyatt had experienced every day when he'd leave his house in the morning and go to Capitol Hill. And though Finn thought his problems extended only to the point of having to hide their love and not hold hands or be intimate in public; life simply wasn't that simple.
"OH MY GOD YOU'RE BACK!! AHH!!" Finn flinched with a mix of happiness to hear that voice, and a feeling that he wasn't caffeinated enough to deal with working and just 'doing' in general. He looked up to see Reagan making her way out from behind the receptionist's desk and towards him with outstretched arms; her heels clicking against the floor as her perfect blond ringlets bounced with every step down the back of her bright pink and green floral printed Lilly Pulitzer dress. "We missed you so much!"
"I missed y'all too!" Finn replied sweetly as he exchanged a warm hug with Reagan, raising his eyebrows with a wide grin to acknowledge Hailey who was also coming in for a hug behind her twin sister.
"How are you feeling?" Asked Hailey with a whisper, as she pulled Finn into a tight embrace that made Finn feel this strange warm sensation in his heart. He felt a muddled mess of emotions in that moment; a mix of love, happiness, and regret; the sort of regret one gets when they make a snap judgement about someone that turned out to be dead wrong.
The truth was that Finn had been feeling that a lot as of late; he felt that in life he'd been hurt by one person whom he let get close to him. He was hurt the first and only time he opened up; and ever since then he'd refused to give anyone the benefit of the doubt. He shut himself off from the world; but now that he's opened himself up to Wyatt, to trust, to happiness; he felt like a looming dark cloud had finally moved on from over his head to reveal the warm cleansing rays of the sun.
"No, yeah! I'm doing great! The doctor's say the surgery went well and I'm all clear to come back to work. Thank God for that!" Finn chuckled warmly as the girl's exchanged a perplexed look.
"Jesus, did you have heart surgery or a personality transplant?!" Joked Hailey with a cheeky smile. "Seriously, we're so glad you're doing well and back here! It's been a drag without you."
"What can I say I have that effect on people!" Finn smirked smugly in jest. "Anything new going on? Tell me everything! Spill the tea, sis!"
"Well. After you left, Congressman Montgomery fired literally every asshole in the office." Hailey whispered as she leant in towards Finn. "The Congressman hired a bunch of new younger, more diverse staff; he said he wanted his staff to look like America."
"Oh my god! And Congressman Montgomery and Kayleigh aren't engaged anymore." Added Reagan, glancing around to room to ensure nobody was within earshot. "We think he's fucking one of the new office assistant, Molly. She's like a super pretty blond and they're always talking and giggling and flirting. And they even eat lunch together."
"Oh!" Finn squeaked as he forced a smile on his face. He felt this body go numb and cold at the same time. "That-that's, WOW! That's amazing! I'm I, um I'm so happy for him!"
"Don't be they're low-key annoying." Hailey muttered with one of her signature eye-rolls. "They're like so weird and secretive about everything; like whispering and giggling and keeping the office door closed and knowing and shit. Honestly thank god you're back because that means she's going back tomorrow."
