Four Years Later
Finn huffed as he used his program to fan away the summer heat, though it didn't seem to do much good. He glanced over towards the sea of family and friends who were guests at his Law school commencement ceremony, smiling wide as he saw them all sitting together and smiling excitedly at him. Finn smiled back, though his smile faltered slightly as he noticed one certain special someone wasn't with them; an empty seat saved for him with a purse strategically placed on it.
Finn glanced back forward towards the podium as the commencement speaker made a speech that he probably wouldn't remember in a few hours; such was always the case with commencement speakers unless they're someone important like Obama or Oprah or Beyoncé. He glanced down in disbelief at the purple gown he had on the tassel of his velvet Law graduation cap lightly ticking his cheek.
It had been four years since Wyatt came out publicly and became yet another out and proud gay member of Congress; the only sitting gay Republican Congressman. During his gap year, Finn applied to Law school while extending his internship on to the rest of the year so that he could work on as Wyatt's assistant. Finn went on to have interviews around the country for law school, being accepted into Duke, Stanford, and Georgetown. Though Wyatt secretly hoped he'd take the offer from Georgetown, he never once pressured Finn with his difficult decision; he felt it wasn't his place. Lucky for the handsome blond, Finn chose Georgetown all on his own.
Politically Wyatt's life was far from easy; he stayed a registered Republican though his voting started to grow more moderate than some of his constituents were happy with. Nonetheless in the Republican primary for his re-election, Wyatt won by a landslide against the other challenger and is seen as the favorite to win re-election in the general election in November.
They were happy; truly and unconditionally happy and madly in love. Life had a way of working out in their favor and all their fears seemed to melt away. Wyatt's speech and coming out on the House chamber floor went viral and overnight he became a political and gay rights sensation. Though he'd received his fair share of hate mail and death threats from some of his more staunchly conservative and religious constituents, it was the support and love he got from Finn, family, friends and suporters that kept Wyatt going. He'd received messages and mail from kids saying that his speech gave them courage to come out to their families. That his speech even helped some priorly disapproving parents come to terms with their child's sexuality. This was what Wyatt wanted from life as a politician; to make a difference in peoples' lives.
Finn loved everything about law school; his classmates, his professors, his classes, everything. But the part that intrigued him most was Immigration law, and though it came to no surprise to any of his friends and family, that was exactly the specialization he planned to go into after he passed the Bar. Though he once thought he'd without a doubt go into policy making, the more Finn thought about it, the more he felt like immigration law was where his true calling lies.
"And to the Georgetown University Law class of 2024, please stand for the ceremonial turn of the tassel." Boomed the Dean of the Law school as Finn got up and glanced over one last time to see that empty seat now wasn't so empty anymore. He felt his heart warm in his chest as he saw Wyatt smiling at him; his baby blue eyes looking even more excited than Finn was in that moment. This was his moment, and he wanted Wyatt to be there. Finn mirrored his classmates and turned the tassel from one side to the other. "Congratulations to the Law Class of 2024."'
It was a bittersweet moment; on the one hand Finn was so excited to embark on a new chapter of his life, but on the other hand it was the end of an era. But no matter what, Finn was excited; every step of his life brought new turns and twists that changed him for the better. The last time he graduated, it was from undergrad. When he started interning with Wyatt and ultimately led him straight to the love of his life.
