Me and the man wearing black stopped to look at Peyton.Peyton: Drop your weapon!
He yelled again. I looked at the man, who was holding the gun in his hand but pointing on the ground with it.
Peyton: I repeat once more! Drop your weapon!
The man drops it to the ground next to him. As it lays on the ground, I look at Peyton with fear.
Me: Peyton...
Peyton: Jose, You'll be alright. Everything's okay now.
I knew he tried to be assuring as he could be. This situation sucked on both sides. Peyton couldn't see very well in the dark. Not because he couldn't see but it was dark and he had to be extra careful since I was next to the man who tried to kill me.
I closed my eyes and started taking deep breaths. I could hear Peyton's footsteps on the ground as he was walking closer. The man next to me chuckled.
Man: What is a young boy like you doing here?
Peyton: Doing my job.
Man: Really?
I could sense the competition in his voice but I wasn't sure if Peyton felt it too, so my eyes landed on Peyton again, giving him an alert expression. Peyton didn't respond in any way so I feared he didn't get my message. I tried once more but it was hopeless and then it felt like time stopped. Random gunshots were fired, making me covering my ears with my hands.
When I finally sensed some silence, I removed my hands slowly because I wasn't sure what might happen next. At first, I looked at myself, trying to ensure that I was okay but then I looked in the direction of Peyton, a gasp escaping my mouth.
Me: Peyton?
Man: Shut the **** up and keep still!
The man looked at me in the dark. It seemed like his gaze was full of threat in his eyes again, which were highlighted by the light coming from the windows.
Man: I'll give you the last chance or your friend here goes.
me: You're a cold-blooded monster. I already told you everything that I know!
I felt tears getting stuck in my throat.
Man: I warned you
He turned his attention to Peyton, fixing the gun's position on his head.
Man: Any last words?
Even in the dark, I could sense that Peyton was badly hurt. I wanted to help him but I couldn't.
Peyton: Go to hell!
Man: I gave you both a chance.
Suddenly more shots were fired out of nowhere. I fell on my back, missing out on what was going on. When I opened my eyes, I took deep breaths in and out, reminding myself what had happened past few minutes. When I finally got back on my legs, it had stayed silent. I ran next to Peyton while seeing the men on the ground also covered in blood. My gaze fell back on Peyton and I noticed a red big spot on his white shirt.
Me: No, Peyton! Peyton!
Peyton could barely make any noise as he was looking at me. He weirdly made movements with his head, so I looked at the direction he pointed to and smiled, there was a picture of a cross. I smiled and looked at him. He slowly closed his eyes.
Me: NO!
Payton's POV
I saw in the corner of my eye how Josephine got barely back up on her feet and started coming towards me. I was lying there on my back and it was getting difficult to breathe. All happened so suddenly, I wasn't able to catch up and process it. From the second of me pointing my gun at the man to the second of hearing shots and Josephine being freaked out by all of it.
