SPLAT!
A flying spoonful of mashed potatoes exploded all over my face. As I wiped the potatoes off my face the whole table assigned for the Hermes cabin and every table in the mess hall froze. Each of them went dead silent. All eyes glued on me. It's been three days you would think they would have gotten used to me by now. And what's the big fuss, I have mashed potatoes all over my face that's it. I thought annoyed. As I was whipping the potatoes mush off my my cheeks Mr. Brunner, who I quickly discovered was actually named Chiron, casually strides into the mess hall to find it silent, and everyone staring at me. He glances to where the eyes were pointed and freezes.
"Hannah, you have been chosen by a god," he told me as he approached me like an infectious disease. I slowly tilt my head up to see a dazzling silver bow and arrow floating above my head, above it a small moon giving off light. I slap my hand over my mouth trying to hold back a scream of surprise and happiness. Chiron walks over to me snatches my arm and yanks my wrist and holds it so high my feet don't touch the ground.
"HANNAH, DAUGHTER OF ARTEEMIS!" He belted it so loud I bet people in California could hear. The whole room still stayed silent, you could hear a pin drop. There wasn't one "good for you", everyone was silent I was wondering what was going on. Daughter of Artemis, who is Artemis? My head was spinning and the feeling of my arm being pulled to far in the air wasn't helping. I noticed Annabeth begin to clap. Then clapping turned into cheering and turned into chaos. The next thing I knew I was on somebody's shoulder, people chanting my name, and it was amazing.
"Okay, okay, settle down everyone. Hannah, I'm going to have Annabeth take you to your new cabin. Tomorrow you start the day as a daughter of Artemis. Come to the big houses after breakfast I will speak to you there, enjoy your night Hannah," Chiron grinned and sauntered out the door. I began to wonder again why was Chiron so interested in me? Also why does everyone always make me wait to get answers?
"Alright, alright, let her down. C'mon Hannah I'll take you to your new cabin," Annabeth walks up to me and (as everyone else does to me) grabs my hand and pulls me through the crowd, and towards the horse shoe of cabins. She leads me to a large sliver cabin with a shiny number 8 on the front of the porch. Annabeth took me inside only to find that this cabin looked as if it hasn't been used on centuries or decades. There were six bunkbeds in the room and only one of me.
"Choose witch ever one you would like," I turned around confused about what Annabeth just told me. All of the other cabins have more people in it. Her eyes widen in a slight realization. "The bunks. You're the first Artemis child ever to live....Chiron will never let you leave," she said the second part after a moment of pause. A look of pity molded onto her features, and that only made me angry. The one thing I hate more than anything is pity.
"What? What do you mean Chiron will never let me leave?!" At that point I was yelling. I'm not just some animal he can keep locked up. She walked up to me and rest her hand on my shoulder.
"Hannah, Artemis is or was a maiden. Witch means she vowed never to have children, ever. But apparently she broke that vow and so now you will be hated by all the gods mostly Zeus. Because you are the proof of his most honest daughter's failure. He is going to try to kill you at every chance he gets, and try to forget you ever existed. Witch means he will send monsters after you many, many monsters. Artemis is the Godess of the hunt and the moon. She has a pure sliver bow and arrows. She tracks down monsters and kills them. She does this with a group called the Hunt, and your mother is the leader of this Hunt. She and the Hunt will do everything in their power to keep you safe if and when you cross Camp Half-blood's boarders." She explained everything to me. Now I understood.
I studied her face for answers, "How do you know all this?"
"How do I know all this? Well books, my mom, Chiron, Percy's dad, but mostly books. It was just a tail though not real... but now it is real." She said with a slight giggle at first. I was so confused, (again)I had so many questions. Am I going to get killed by monsters, will I ever meet my mom, what's this mean for all my friends are they in danger too?
"This is why you were so good at archery. Because you are Artemis's only daughter, and probably will be forever. She bestowed all of her gifts and powers onto you," Annabeth sounded slightly sympathetic, but also in awe. I started walking to the door. There were too many thoughts in my head and I needed to flush them out somehow. Pushing through Annabeth I began to run I heard her call to me from the cabin door, but I kept running. Not knowing where my feet were talking me.
After about 5 to 10 minutes I stopped. I was trying to catch my breath when I realized I was at the entrance to the training arena. Perfect stress relief. I instantly walked over to the racks of weapons and went straight for a bow and arrow. I shot every target in sight and hit dead center every time until all of them were filled with arrows. But then I heard a a branch snap. I twisted and knocked my arrow. The point touching Leo's throat. What the hell is Leo doing here? I looked into his dark eyes and saw that they were glazed over with fear.
"Um Hannah, can you move your arrow please?" he asked quietly when I hadn't moved away. I blinked and lowered my arrow without turning away from my gaze with Leo. He lowered his hands and then cleared his throat as he blinked and broke our gaze, his eyes snapping to all the targets I shot and gasp. I turned around and finally realized what I did. Slightly proud of the bundles that had found their way to a target.
"Wow, you must have a LOT on your mind," Leo told me with a chuckle. I could tell by the edge in his voice he was a little freaked out making me feel bad. I don't want him to think that I'm crazy. He looked over at me and our eyes locked and there was a hint of worry in the chocolate orbs.
"You all right?" He asked as his brows furrowed slightly.
I shrugged, "I don't know." I turned and studied the training arena once more. Every target had about 5-6 arrows covering the bullseye, even the targets without the yellow bullseye, but Leo and I could still tell that if it did have the paint on it I would've hit the center.
"You are probably the best shot I've ever seen," Leo confessed to me. I smiled at this but then turned around put my hands on my hips. A playful grin found its way to my lips.
"Probably?" I said eyeing him. He chuckled grabbing a bow and a quiver off the weapons rack.
"Well," he said,"there's me, so..."
"Are you challenging me?" I laughed and raised an eyebrow. He knocked his arrow ready to shoot when I stopped him. I jogged up to two targets pulled out all the arrows out, threw them on the ground and got in to position with my own bow in hand.
"On three," Leo tells me, "1...2...3!"
We both shoot at the same time but I don't aim at the target, I aim at Leo's arrow. Mine hits his redirecting it away from his target. Mine ricocheted off his and landed dead center of my target at an angle. Leo just stood there in awe trying to take in everything that just happened. I was trying my best to cover up my own surprise that I actually did what I planned. He looked at my target then his arrow, his mouth didn't seem to want to close as he stuttered.
"How did you..." His voice trailed off and he walked over until he was standing right in front of me. We were only about 10 inches apart when he said in a playful tone, "You need a nickname."
I looked at him dumbfounded not able to keep a smile from my face, "A nickname? Like what?"
He stared down at me with a small grin. Our eyes were locked together. That's when I heard Nicki call out, "Hey! There you two are we were looking all over the place! C'mon, the campfire is about to start!" Leo and I chuckled a little and followed Nicki to the camp fire.
