World's Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is observed on 10th September every year to raise awareness regarding suicide and how to prevent suicide globally. The day came to existence from the year 2003 when The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) collaborated with World Health Organization (WHO) and World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH).
After that day, now every year on this day many countries observe the day in order to raise awareness and help people to know more about the way to prevent suicide. Because suicide is never a solution to a problem. The IASP works for preventing suicidal behavior amongst people, reducing its effects and also they provide a forum for people to contact and make distress calls. More precisely, World Suicide Prevention Day is the day when these organizations arrange different events and present their upcoming works for the whole year to work on raising awareness about suicide, how to help the people with suicidal tendencies and how to reach out to the helplines.
According to a statistics of WHO, every year 800,000 people die due to suicide and one person takes their life every 40 seconds. And this rate is also increasing.
Suicide is the result of a convergence of psychological, genetic, social and cultural and other risk factors, sometimes combined with of trauma and loss. People with mental illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia, OCD, anxiety disorders or insomnia are more likely to attempt suicide. Researches show that, people who commit suicide belong to a heterogeneous group with unique, complex and multifaceted causal influences preceding their final act. And the suicide prevention experts are working on these.
Suicide doesn't only affect the person who commits it, rather an attempt of suicide affects the mental and physical health of a good number of people who are related with the person. According to the research, a suicide affects approximately 135 people. Suicidal behavior can trigger others and also have an impact to make them attempting suicide or causing mental distress which can lead to severe mental illnesses. That's why, it's never only about you or I, it's not about an individual, it's always about all of us.
However, this year because of the spreading of the pandemic has mentally affected more people than the previous years, which has caused mental illnesses in a good number of people. Every year IASP decides a theme for this day. This year the theme is "Working together to prevent suicide". This is the third year in a row to use this theme for WSPD. This theme focuses on a specific aspect of suicide which aims to prevent suicide more effectively in a global scale. The theme refers that, "we all have a role to play and together we can collectively address the challenges presented by the suicidal behavior in our society today".
Let's work together from now on to help the people who are needy. Let's help ourselves by working together. Because, y'all are precious gifts for us. Y'all are beautiful and important in your own way. You make someone's day brighter just by being with them, even if you're not aware of it. You're loved and cared by someone and there is someone who wants to be loved and cared by you. You're amazing! Whenever a problem arises, suicide is never a solution to the problem. There are better solutions for the problem and for solving it, you need to ask for help. Y'all will be able to make it with the help you need. Even if yesterday was bad and today is worse, tomorrow will be better. And we all have to work together to make our tomorrow better from today. Let's work together and live together and make this world a better place for all of us. Take care of yourself and also others. Keep yourself happy and spread your happiness to others. And don't forget to keep smiling :)
