Uncovering difficulties:There are many ways in which Psychologists will assess problems with students in the classroom…
Talking to teachers = Typically, this is the first step. Discussing what the teacher believes the student needs help with and what their concerns are.
Talking to parents = This can be used to discuss how the individual copes with tasks within the home and how they interact with other members of the family.
Analysing schoolwork = This may uncover patterns in the child’s writing or work. It can also identify if there are any areas or subjects that the individual struggles with in particular.
Observing the child in their classroom = This serves as a way to observe their behaviour within class; how they interact with other students, their level of participations, and how well they follow instructions.
Talking to the child = Although this doesn’t always happen, talking to them may involve giving them tasks that assess how they work. This is a direct observation and interaction.
Giving the child a questionnaire or assessment = There are a number of tests that have been designed specifically to identify particular learning difficulties.
Learning difficulties:
It is extremely difficult to decipher the exact cause of learning disabilities; is it environmental (nurture), biological (nature), or perhaps even both (Stress diathesis theory). However, many learning difficulties are identified and diagnosed by recognising their symptoms.
The following four all begin with the prefix ‘dys’ which is a Latin term meaning ‘difficulty’.
Dyslexia – This causes the individual to have difficulties with anything that involves spelling, reading, and writing. However, these individuals are often more gifted when it comes to having a creative mind.
Dyspraxia – This means one has poor coordination which can cause ‘clumsy’ movements or even just a lack of ability to coordinate daily activities.
Dysgraphia – This also causes a difficulty to coordinate but also causes the individual to struggle processing the written word, (writing and reading).
Dyscalculia – Lastly, this means the individual experiences impairments regarding arithmetic and calculations.
Behavioural problems:
Psychologists can assist teachers in dealing with disrupting students by helping them understand how to uncover the child’s triggers and how to resolve them. This could involve talking to the parents and assessing lifestyle issues such as stress, diet and social pressure that may be either causing or worsening the issue at hand.
