Chapter 22: The Deceiver

More than twelve hours had already passed, no one ever caught sight of the said demon. The contenders searched everywhere and even used En to track where the creature is but to no avail. All they could sense were their co-contenders who were also searching. All they thought of was that the demon was good at hiding and continued searching for it.

But then, after a week, no one still managed to catch a glimpse of the demon. The number of contenders were starting to go down and down. There were enough food and water in the mountains and you can even sleep peacefully at the top of the tree which only meant one thing. The demon was consuming them one by one without them noticing it.

Gon plopped on the ground, groaning. "Where is that demon hiding?" He whined, making Killua look back at him with both of his hands in his pocket. "Why can't we find it?" Gon added, making Killua sigh and plop beside the whining boy.

"Maybe it has a good hiding place and preferred to hunt secretly." Killua said, leaning against the tree trunk behind them and making himself comfortable.

"That just doesn't make sense. If it preferred to hunt secretly, then why would it consume Silverio-san's colleagues in front of him? And demons are flamboyant creatures! They hate being ignored!" Killua eyed the green-themed boy, questioning his words.

"How can you say that?" He asked Gon. Gon immediately smiled sheepishly.

"I overheard Hisashi-san and Hisoka talking." Killua's eyes widened at what he said.

"What? Are they close?"

"No, I heard that while we were on our way here."

"You know, Gon, you shouldn't listen to other people's conversations unless badly needed." Killua eyed his surroundings before whispering. "Especially if it's Hisoka and Hisashi. They might disrupt your innocence." Gon's eyebrows furrowed, confused at his statement.

"Disrupt my innocence? What does that mean?"

"No, no, it's nothing. By the way, we haven't seen those two until now, right?" Killua changed the subject.

"Yeah. I don't think they were victimized by the demon, though." Gon yawned, bending one of his knees and placing his arm over it.

"I agree. As absurd as it sounds, Hisashi alone is stronger than most of the Zoldyck family's assassins." His mouth went agape at that.

"Even Illumi?" Killua nodded at his question that made him even more baffled.

"Even Illumi. And her pairing up with Hisoka makes them almost invincible. So I'm sure, the demon wouldn't be able to win against them. But the thought of the signal to be fired when the demon was killed not flaring for a week now makes me question their capabilities." Killua closed his eyes as he took a deep breath.

"I'm sure they have plans. The question is what their plan is." Killua agreed to what Gon said.

Three days passed once again, the 58 contenders are now down to 8. As to how that happened? No one knew. Those that are left were Gon, Killua, Tasha, Yukoi, Desune, Pia, Hisoka, and Hisashi. It was already midnight but it didn't stop Gon and Killua from moving by jumping from one branch to another. They're hoping to see the demon and just end it all. Many died already, and Silverio's words were all a lie.

The demon was way stronger than the contenders. They are all meant as fodder after all. By the time the others realized that, they're all covered in blood and are taking their last breaths. They all had similar thoughts in their minds.

I should've listened. After all, that woman was right all the time.

Gon and Killua still weren't able to track Hisashi and Hisoka. They were lucky to survive after all the other contenders who were stronger than them got taken down so they needed to be more careful.
