How does he know I'm afraid of the dark? I haven't told anyone. Unless... Nadia!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We headed back after a hard day at school. I kept watching her yawn. Her swollen eyes and constant yawning are something that now seems to me to be her personal trait, as if lack of sleep had become part of her identity.
No matter how much we all tried to encourage her to sleep more, it just couldn't be done. Her body wouldn't allow her to rest, with the events triggered the survival function. Constantly on alert waiting to counter multiple attacks from myriad fronts.
One of man's most primordial instincts, her psychology should have reached a limit in order to turn into something that could withstand more pain, more stress than her body was already capable of.
We passed the girl from the second floor and headed through my house to her apartment. She had her cell phone constantly up, trying to catch the internet signal.
Nadia: Come on, we need a little more.
She would get up on her toenails and fall straight, she couldn't maintain that posture without causing her pain. The bell sounded and with her eyes nailed to the computer screen unlocked.
Erica: What happened? Did you get the signal?
Nadia: Not yet..
She sat teasing the screen by moving her fingers in different directions at times and at the same time. I couldn't figure out what she was doing, but all the moves managed to cling to her. I expected her to redeem me with her words announcing our entry into the internet and the solution of the mystery.
Nadia: I don't have internet.
She said lifelessly for a while, and then completely unexpectedly threw her phone on the couch.
Nadia: What could have happened to this old thing now?
Here's one more thing I couldn't help her with. I was a tech scrap. Frustrated and with the fire of curiosity still burning inside us we head towards the kitchen.
Nadia: At least we've been left with food.
Her hand was found pushing down the switch. Although in theory the lights were on practically there was no change in the atmosphere. Her phrase was cut in half and her hand began to abruptly blink.
Nadia: Blackout?
She's asking out of curiosity. I'm opening the door.
Erica: No.. The rest of the building has power.
Nadia: And what the .... happened to us then?
We didn't have to ask ourselves for long as Orpheus came.
Orpheus: Oh! Hey, Erica, back here?
Nadia: We don't have power.
Orpheus: I know.. Dad called an electrician, and it looks like there's been a lot of damage to our circuit. It's going to take a lot of money to fix it.
Nadia: And when is that going to happen?
Orpheus: You don't understand me, I think... This money is an amount that Dad can't give right now. With Mom in the hospital, our expenses are increased and the money for the electrician has to be kept in case Mom needs to be transferred to a better clinic.
Nadia: What? Are you kidding us, obviously?
Orpheus: No, I'm telling the truth! Unfortunately, that's what's happening.
He seemed to be telling the truth. He must have been fed the same lie.
Nadia: But how?.. I don't remember ever having a financial problem.
And from everything they could cut, he said to cut the power. I've never heard more ridiculousness. He's hiding something. And he's trying to hide it desperately by making no subtle and discreet moves. But cut the power? That is unbelievable.
I let Orpheus talk a little with Nadia, who, in the end, pretending to believe him, leaves for her room, in one hand she was holding a pizza box and in the other mine.
Nadia: Things are much more serious than we thought.
